It's Official, The Mario Movie Sequel Is Based On Mario Galaxy

No interest whatsoever in the Mario movies but if it gets us some kind of rerelease of Galaxy 2 I'll take it.

They wouldn't jump straight to Galaxy, would they? It feels like you would do Super Mario World....

Hopefully Galaxy 3 gets announced today and not just a Galaxy 2 port.

I think I might go and sit by myself and watch the Direct. I have the feeling it's going to be a big one...or at least it will be fun watching Arlo and Johnny Millenium react.

I like your thinking but sadly I think the best we can hope for is a Galaxy 2 port.....It would be the perfect filler to keep us going whilst the next new 3D Mario game cooks in the oven for a few more years.

I also think my use of the word "sadly" is maybe me being a little over dramatic or sounding ungrateful.

I'd actually be thrilled if we got a Galaxy 2 port..... it was a phenomenal game

Anything less than a Mario Galaxy 2 port in HD full screen will be a let down for me on the Mario front and to release this year.

But I hope I’m wrong, I think they well mess around with maybe a lesser game or send out sticker packs and pencil cases instead 🤣

Apart from MKW and DKB my switch 2 is alone until Nintendo give me something else.
Of course MP4 should be this year.

Nintendo wouldn’t promote a new movie with a 15yr old game. It’s Galaxy 3 time.

Interesting, but I'm hoping to see a game linked to the movie. I don't like Mario for his movies, exactly...

I mean, the next movie is scheduled to release on 4/3/26... I feel like this weekend would be a great time to drop a premiere teaser trailer.

I couldn't care less about Super Mario movies. Just give us Galaxy 2 on Switch.

@OldGamer999 They've released some kind of game for each 5 year anniversary since at least 2010. I think they'll do something again this year. I just hope it is a proper remake or remaster this year if it is not Mario Maker.

@UltimateOtaku91 Probably the best chance for it tbh. The Movie comes out during the start of the new financial year and Nintendo will want something to ensure the Switch 2s second year can beat the first.

So having a new Mario game come shortly after the movie would be perfect.

@HugoGED I wouldn't bet against it at this point. The increase in hardware power from the Wii would allow them to really expand on the concept from the original Wii games. It would likely have been developed in tandem with DK Bananza and I'm wondering if it could use some of the same voxel-tech to bring the world to life...

Well won’t be long until 2pm UK time.
I will keep my expectations low and if Galaxy 2 remaster happens this year, will jump for joy.
If not and it’s just a bit of this and let then it would not surprise me as Nintendo as amazing as they can be, can also be a let down at times.

@Member_the_game Maybe we will get both, Galaxy 2 HD shadow dropped today and a teaser trailer for Galaxy 3 to release next year.

I'll give the second Mario film a go when it comes to streaming services, but I didn't think much of the first one. I personally felt that the Sonic films were better.

@Skunkfish travelling through universes? I don't know, I'm not a marketer or idea pitcher for a video game company. I would just say that it would backwards for them to go back to Galaxy. Especially getting a 3rd installment to something after it's been 15+ years and 2 consoles.

I loved the first movie so whatever it is I'll gladly check it out.
Now when it comes to games, I like the Galaxy franchise, but in terms of gameplay I would like them to at least keep some of the exploration found in Odyssey.

Honestly they can go whichever direction they see fit. I trust them, but they shouldn't forget about older/more skilled gamers who love Mario. Bring more challenge to the franchise in general. Not just the couple last levels of a game, make challenge more prominent I general.

@Croctopus man Rosalina's story book has to be Nintendo's saddest story to date.

@HugoGED I feel like personally I'd probably give that distinction to Emio, but it's definitely a lot more than you'd expect out of a Mario game.

I still think that the next one will he a Super Mario World movie, and that the third one will be a Mario Galaxy movie. But that's just my theory 🤔.

My guess is that they do a galaxy 1+2 remaster at some point soon. Maybe they even announce it today.

I've actually never played Galaxy 2. It felt like it was shadow dropped out of nowhere and I never found the time to go get it.

@UltimateOtaku91 I'd be happy in either case. Anyway, even if a Galaxy 3 game was announced now, I doubt it would be released before late 2026/early 2027.

I can only imagine how Illumination would butcher this one.

I'd like a movie based on the Super Mario Galaxy entries. They're still in my top three 3D Marios. The first SMG is still my favorite.

Oh the possibilities they could have with the story and actions.

I'm excited, the Galaxy games were always some of the most cinematic so it makes sense to make a movie based off of them.

Now they have an excuse to release the Super Mario Galaxy 2 rom on Nintendo Switch Online or however it's called now, but I'm still disappointed with Super Mario 3D Some-Stars missing one of the best Mario 3D games.

Only thing bothers me if this is based on Mario Galaxy does that mean Luigi will get sidelined again? Unless there saving him for a Luigi's mansion movie.

While some people will disagree with me, the first Mario movie was honestly really good and I expect no less from this movie. As Mario always said “Let’s-a-go!”

Kinda disappointed. I’d hoped they would just make a more original sequel pulling from a lot of different games instead of mainly one. Alas. And not even a sighting of Yoshi

Weird decision, Super Mario World movie next seemed to make sense to me, especially as they hinted at introducing Yoshi at the end of ther first movie.

The first movie just had a bunch of Mario scenes slapped together and the and the editing didn't make sense.

It was a 90 minute long trailer for Mario games and is why so many disliked it.

Now that is a fantastic decision, for my taste. Galaxy is my favourite Mario game and one of my favourite games ever. Atmosphere, gameplay, music (!), everything.

I always did like the Super Mario Galaxy games. So I will definitely watch this one! I just hope it will be better than the last one. I felt it was a bit lacking in the story and character development departments. Other film critics also shared this sentiment. So I hope that they will take these critiques to heart and make the second film's plot and character development even meatier and more in-depth.

@Croctopus I wouldn't get too excited if I were you. They'll find some way to bungle up Galaxy.

Music and graphics...I dream of the movie quality inside a game in the future !

I just hope they're not gonna scrap Yoshi from the movie now. That teaser at the end of the first movie better not lead to nothing.

I will take the old Mario cartoons from 1989-1991 over these movies any day.

I hope for an actual teaser with new footage soon, we know Yoshi will appear and that made everyone thought we we're gonna see Mario World, but then they surprise us with this! They love to be unpredictable, which is necessary for film.

You know why this is so cool for fans like me? Because it shows that Nintendo acknowledges Galaxy as a standout moment in the series. Not just any 18 year old game. They wouldn't have created a movie around Super Mario 3D World or New Super Luigi U.

Imho Galaxy 1 is still unsurpassed...

Hopefully this means the story won’t be as generic this time. And hopefully Jack Black will sing again!

@N00BiSH You're caricaturing my words, and the desires of those who want more in the future, it's not fair. The movie is not realistic at all, it's just graphically "powerful" (we're not with a Mario 1993 movie style XD). A Mushroom Kingdom like that to explore would be awsome for me. With beautiful music and animations.

There's also something quite suspicious here... we first hear Super Mario World music but then Mario Galaxy's theme starts rolling after we go upwards. Something tells me they want to tackle both a Mario World and Mario Galaxy story in one movie.
But that could be a mistake if it's still going to be a 90-minute movie, as it simply wouldn't allow enough runtime for them to put everything together in a cohesive and satisfactory way. A two-part Mario World/Mario Galaxy duo movie would've been much more preferred if that's the case.
We still don't know much, but with this in mind, I can only hope they deliver a solid sequel, or who knows what this could mean.

@Croctopus Yeah, you're right about Rosalina. While she's a fan favorite character to Mario fans, you would think she will indeed be in the movie, though I can't see the studio portraying her the way she is in games (because you don't see gentle and quite characters in movies these days.) I like Rosalina a lot myself, but I can only hope she's in it for a short screen time (like at the end of the film).

I love Galaxy and look forward to this. But I kinda feel like World/Land would be a better next step for a sequel. To properly introduce Yoshi, Daisy, and Wario. Swap out New York and Maybe the Kong island for Sarasaland and Dinosaur island. Then save Galaxy and Rosalina for the 3rd movie. It would mirror Sonics movie progression. With its sequels adding new faces and going to different countries. Then the 3rd adds a central character with depth and includes space
