I'd think that the other factor in the 3DS price drop is that the handheld market was facing an existential crisis from smartphones at the time, and were worried far more about losing ground to them than to Sony who were somehow managing to drop the ball even harder for that market at the time.
In contrast, when the Wii U bombed even harder, they didn't slash the price and offer everyone a bunch of free games. They didn't need to, because they knew that there would still be a market for games consoles when its successor came out.
Anyway, whichever way you slice it, the Switch 2 sales so far suggest that they're not going to be cutting prices any time soon.
@WaveBoy that’s on the PlayStation site pushsquare. Let’s stay on topic instead of whataboutisms
To be fair, the comparisons are valid. I frequent some PC spaces and I would argue in that space the price increase pressures are way more intense. Also crappy ports and technical issues at launch are far more frequent so there's reason to complain there also
But PC gamers are pretty resistant to this kind of stuff. Despite the reputation in other gaming circles it's not because they're loaded. It's because they're scrappy and make do. And if a game doesn't meet their standards they move on
Admittedly they are plenty in that space who are pretty openly hostile towards Nintendo. But, IMO, that's mostly because Nintendo has been pretty firm against emulation, doesn't put their games on PC and generally has a hardware philosophy that doesn't align. But even so, you never see threads like this on the PC space. It's broadly positive and when there are negatives people just ... don't buy it.
The 50 series of GPUsis overpriced and a waste of time "yeah, it is, I'm still using my 1080, it's showing it's age but it still does the job". The battery life of these PC portables are low "yeah, it is, that's what the charge port is for". This game is unplayable on Steam Deck "yeah, it is, but it'll be great on Steam Deck 2". This game has huge technical issues "yeah, don't buy it"
There's something especially toxic here that only really seems to exist in the Nintendo community. Even though the same pressures exist everywhere. And it's something that only really seems to show it's head when Nintendo finds it's way to the top of the console sales charts
"Is the constant negativity in this community getting to anyone else?" - Sounds like me with Pokemon. I'm a fan of the series, loving almost all games in the franchise and having high reviews for them. (Most not actually written, but still.) That said, while I understand people voicing their opinions in public spaces like Youtube and whatnot, I can't help but run into some of the complaints and kind of feel brought down.
I also hope that Game Freak will get back at making games fans will enjoy again. I would like to think after Legends Z-A is released and, if it's well received, people will gain more trust in the company.
Yes, I know people didn't think SV were the best games. I'm not trying to excuse GF here, but I think I would have to agree with Joe Merrick on his theory why the games were released the way they were. The theory that the games launched during covid and were rushed like other games that came out during the pandemic.
Webmaster of Voyage of Across Many Worlds and write articles about Pokémon and other games I've enjoyed. As well as work on a game project as a rookie dev. Site in profile.

@skywake if a game doesn’t run properly on a pc the likelyhood is the next graphics card will resolve the issue. They don’t need to wait 8 years to get a proper version. Maybe that’s why they are resilient. It’s one thing to wait a year. No one wants to wait 8 years.
@Bluelink45 Seems like many on here already made good points so I'll try to keep it simple.
In the end, I believe for generations companies like Nintendo represented the great escape of present day reality. No matter what was going on you could just turn on whatever "fun machine" console you had and just lose yourself for however long you could. Fast forward to present day and virtually everything in our lives keeps changing (usually for the worst) and taking its toll. It's easy to pile on Nintendo but in the end they're in the money making business. No business means no money and vice versa. We are being squeezed everywhere across everything.
Here are some examples on my end. When my wife and I purchased our condo a few years back, the monthly HOA dues just got raised to $400. When we finally moved in, it was raised to $480. A few months back (after a "special assessment" didn't pass) our dues got raised now to $576. When we moved in, my weekly Sam's Club shopping trip averaged $50-$70 a trip. Now, it's $130-$160 a trip and I buy the same stuff plus or minus a couple of random things. My car insurance used to be around $1700 a year for a now 13 year old car (so as the car aged the rate would slowly go down every year). As of last year, my insurance went up to over $2000 a year. Don't even get me started on anything streaming services. Those prices and bundles change every quarterly report to squeeze even more out of you.
I could go on forever. The point of me mentioning all that is we're all frustrated with being taken from all sides with little to no relief. I believe as soon as we see companies like Nintendo either going all in or just dipping their toes in whatever "money making practices" it's easy to be like, "No! You were supposed to be my escape from all this nonsense! Not join them!". At least that's how I feel but in the end it's the world we live in and I have the power to either give the money or not.

(looks at GPU prices)
Yeah, nah, that's not the take. Also I was more talking about games that just run poorly generally. Sure, way down the line you can brute force your way through it on PC by having an order of magnitude more power years down the track or something. But it's not uncommon for PC to be an afterthought while consoles are the primary target
There are games on PC that are just straight up poorly optimised or poorly designed for PC. They'll unnecessarily eat up all your CPU resources or something or just be borked when it comes to shader compilation. Whatever it is. And generally the PC gaming community, I feel, just move on when a game is bad or poor value on PC
It's a different kind of mindset

An opinion is only respectable if it can be defended. Respect people, not opinions
I think I nailed my exact feelings on this. It's when you're friends or family with someone whose making other people leave them and you're just there like "I'm still here for you, but I can only do so much, I don't support this, I just think its a mistake".
That's the one, I got it. I still support Nintendo, I still like Nintendo, but there's only so much I can or want to do here, y'know.
