Closing out today's Nintendo Direct was a surprise announcement — we're getting a brand new Fire Emblem game on Switch 2 in 2026.
Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave looks absolutely incredible and appears to take place in an arid region with a huge colosseum seemingly a central feature.
Expect more tactical gameplay, some rather lovely character designs, and a few hints at some interconnected lore... Lots of fans think this is a sequel to Three Houses thanks to some familiar characters popping up in the trailer, so judge for yourself.
Here's what we know so far:
"The Heroic Games have begun. The newest entry in the Fire Emblem series is set to enter the arena. The debut trailer provided a glimpse of the intertwining story, characters and turn-based tactical RPG gameplay that awaits players when the game launches for Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026."
Are you looking forward to Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave? Let us know in the comments.

It always looks great until the battles start
FODLAN EMBLEM AGAIN. FEED ME MORE.
I think this might be the best Nintendo Direct ever, and with the reveal of a new Fire Emblem, and the last moment indication that it's a sequel to Three Houses?! Best end note ever, for sure!
My newly most anticipated game for Switch 2 (sorry Metroid Prime 4 !).
Three Houses is easily in my top 3 games on the original Switch and this one seems to be a direct follow-up (in some way).
I can't wait !!
I love the Fire Emblem series. This looks great. I'm actually surprised we're getting one so soon into the Switch 2's life
A very meh direct but such a good announcement to end it! Looks like a distant three houses sequel - if they combine the writing of that game with the gameplay from engage, we'll be onto an absolute classic
Welp that’s it. My whole next year is sorted. IS has been in my brain lately and I appreciate it.
(Just hope there is a female version of Player Character…and no incest. Give it a rest for one game please. )
Ready for this! The only thing that really excited me in that Direct.
@PinderSchloss In all fairness, TTRPG gameplay is very hard to make look entirely exciting, even for marketing. Only one that fully manages it is XCOM with its dramatic gameplay camera shots that's like, the only thing the trailers all use.
i didn’t think this deserved one more thing (maybe im just mad about it not being animal crossing) but it looks like a big, deep game, so it might be my first venture into the series!
Wasn’t that Sothis?
Sothis at the end definitely hyped me a lot.
Three Houses is one of my favorite Switch games, I hope this one is as good as that (and not like Engage)
This was a fantastic reveal. I didn’t like the last Fire Emblem game because of its childish art style and story, but Three Houses is one of my all time favorite games. This one seems to be following the same route. I can’t wait!
@graviton Yes, yes it was.
Really glad this one seems to be going full steam ahead on being more Three Houses. So, so much prefer that being the blueprint for the series going forward than Engage.
Looks pretty good. Haven't played FE since Awakening. The Switch games didn't look great to me, but this looks a lot better.
This was the game that made up for a bunch of re-releases, rehashes and replay it again with DLC games. Might be the next time I buy a Nintendo game.
"Oh ok new Fire Emblem. Cool I'm hoping it's better than Engage, I wonder w- wait was that a Heroes Relic? WAIT IS THAT ANOTHER ONE? SOTHIS?!?!"
Is this a sequel or a prequel?! I need ANSWERS
This and Dragon Quest were the highlights.
It certainly LOOKS like Three Houses lol. Very happy I didn't have to wait long for the only reason I bought a Switch 2.
ANOTHER TEN YEARS OF THREE HOUSES DISCOURSE!
(I wonder if this is in-house or back at Kou Shibiwase. I want to say in-house cause this is actually pretty and not as BUTT UGLY as Fodland.)
This has me intrigued for a FE game in a while.
I accept that it's been a while since we last got a Fire Emblem game but there were so many coming out so rapidly for a few years there that my first reaction was "UGH". I'm happy for the fans of the series but I hope Nintendo doesn't ride the spinoff train into the ground this go around.
@Kazman2007 Really the only time they've ever released spinoffs in particularly close proximity to each other is Heroes and Warriors both coming out in 2017, and seeing as the former's a free-to-play mobile game really not sure that should count.
I thought I saw one of the beasts from 3H in the trailer. Then I saw Sothis. I am in!
Oh yeah. This is the one. Three Houses was my favorite Switch game by a mile and this is connected? Yup I'm sold. Give it to me!
Congratulations to Fire Emblem for graduating from underwhelming Direct opener to underwhelming closer!
I jest - I am interested - but I was hoping for a bit more from the ending of the first post-Switch 2 launch direct, haha
Im not a huge fire emblem fan (l enjoyed Sacred Stones and Awakening) but I couldn’t really get into Three Houses or Engage. I’ll keep an eye on this one as it looks more grounded but I can’t say I’m hyped.
3H was one of my favorite Switch games, so I'm all over this.
My jaw dropped when I heard Sothis' voice at the end of the trailer.
This might be the game that makes me upgrade to Switch 2...
This was surprising and even more so since it's a straight up new Fire Emblem, clearly by the Three Houses team, instead of the rumored Genealogy remake (it's really weird as that was tied to the Engage leaks that turned out to be true) - anyway, so looking forward to it whenever it comes out next year!
Time for me to spend a ridiculous amount of time playing Fire Emblem again. We still don't have the remake of FE4 which is a meme at this point but a brand new game is even better!
Also I don't think this means the FE4 remake is dead. This looks like it's being made by the same team that did Three Houses which was developed by Koei Tecmo, while Engage was made in house by Intelligent Systems. So I honestly believe the FE4 remake is being developed in house while Koei works on the new game.
This was my most wanted announcement. We already knew about Metroid Prime 4 et al, but this made my day! I'm a huge FE fan and this game looks great! And from what we glimpsed, I think it's safe to say this one is connected to Three Houses, very exiting!
This is the reason I will finally get a Switch 2 next year.
More Fire Emblem is always a great thing!
Not feeling the character designs yet again but they're certainly a step above Engages. And with it seemingly being connected to 3H, then I'm sure I can expect the story and writing to not take a backseat like in Engage too. Definitely looking forward to seeing more
Best announcement of the Direct (not too difficult).
Day one for me
@FX29 Three Houses was developed by both Intelligent Systems and a team from Koei Tecmo, it was a collaboration, because Intelligent Systems was having trouble bringing Fire Emblem to the big screen.
I wonder if there will a female version of the protagonist. I haven't got a Switch 2 since FE is the only Nintendo exclusive that interest me.
If this has ties to Three Houses, it'd be awfully nice if it could get a Switch 2 update for those of us who've been putting off playing through it!
@Lizuka I mean from 2015 to 2019 there was a game every two years, plus multiple spinoffs. I don't think any other Nintendo franchise has ever had a release schedule that frequent.
I just hope the gameplay is more like Engage (and the 3DS games) over Three Houses, which was punctuated with so much fluff that it didn't feel much like a Fire Emblem game, and lost my interest after a few hours.
Sothis seems to confirm this is the 3 Houses world. Thats interesting
Fire Emblem Four Houses 😞
@Kazman2007 Top of my head the only years since 2000 to not have at least one Kirby game are 2001, 2007, 2013, and 2024.
I'm so glad they decided to ditch the ridiculous color palettes in Engage. This looks SO much better and like a real FE game.
Love the soundtrack in the trailer too.
@Lizuka Mostly Spinoffs, the main series was never that frequent. However, I concede I do have had some bias towards Fire Emblem since I feel that Nintendo leans on it a bit as their Fantasy RPG series, and I am really hoping Golden Sun gets another chance. It's obviously not how it works, but I was young and irrational. In any case, I'm just happy that others are happy.
That Dietrich... I almost thought I was seeing Castlevania's Alucard, but anyway, looks promising even if it's not for me. I hope this is the visual quality it's promising.
@SillyG
Engage had the much better gameplay. Even though I love Three Houses it had lots of issues. The social sim aspects at the monastery slowed the progression to a snails pace at times.
This game was just the cherry on top for that direct, my most anticipated game for next year.
Never played a Fire Emblem before, but this does look pretty good! Tactical gameplay isn't my favorite though.
At least personally even on a gameplay level I didn't like Engage and really have no idea what people see in it. There's absolutely nothing about that experience I want to see carry over to future games other than maybe, "Please make a knockoff of Yunaka that actually has other characters that are even mildly interesting to interact with."
@Gatorclops since she said "Remember me?" I'm going with a sequel
And now I have a reason to buy a Switch 2.
I might need to play FE Three Houses after this Direct
@MSTRDM that's what I thought and she's clearly older. But the setting seems a little older which is why I was torn. However it could just be a new area outside of Fodlan (Almyra?) where this is their attire and architecture.
Either way- is it 2026 yet I need to know when this comes out so I can book the week off work.
Dollars to donuts Theodora's English VA is Tara Platt (Edelgard from Three Houses).
I'm okay that there was no XenoBlade news, as I am getting what looks like a prequel to 3 Houses!
So ready for a new FE game. The Switch 2 game to look out for.
Nice that it's a new entry, I was hoping for the Geneology remake but this one will do.
Finally a reason to get a Switch 2, limited edition console please Nintendo!
This announcement took the direct from mid to amazing. I love the balance between Houses art style and Engage's graphics engine.
Fire Emblem? We are so back, boys.
I've been over Three Houses for a while but hey, it's a new Fire Emblem. I'll play it and probably become obsessed anyway lol
I need this now!
This and the DQ 7 remake, plus the latest Resident Evil games make this a solid direct for me
Every direct i just say, "please don't end with some lame JRPG like fire emblem" and yet I know 95% of directs end with some lame jrpg
Technically, the Switch 2 belongs to my son, but I’m sure he’ll let me borrow it when I want to play the physical collectors edition of this next year. I thought the presentation was OK until this reveal, and now I feel it is great. In terms of first party, they announced many things that I was not expecting. The third-party ports I wanted (Metaphor, Clair Obscur, AC Shadows, KCD2, Blue Prince) are still out there, just not coming any time soon.
@Kraven
It certainly looks more serious than the cartoony Engage, but has possibly more flair than Three Houses. For the record, I love both games 9/10.
Looking neat! And they are teasing a connection with Three houses.
@PikaPhantom
I’m a fan of the series, so it was less underwhelming than the marathon.
I’m not a runner.
@Kazman2007
This may have to do with the relatively low budgets, combined with a dedicated fan base.
We seem to have become accustomed to waiting 7 years for a new game in a series.
The only things I wanted from this direct going in was a Metroid Prime release date and some sort of Fire Emblem announcement. As the direct went along and got closer to the hour mark, I kept thinking, "we're not going to get a Fire Emblem, are we?" I didn't think they would use Fire Emblem as a "one more thing." It so awesome that they did!
I can't believe how far this series has come: from worrying whether Awakening would even get a western release (unlike New Mystery of the Emblem) after it was announced to the series being the closing feature of the direct. So glad to see so many people excited for my favorite game series!
@andyg1412
We already own a Switch 2 in the family, which belongs to my son. I was thinking at some point when they do a mid cycle refresh we would get a second. But seriously if they make a limited-edition Fire Emblem console, I will jump in on day one. I don’t think the game sells enough copies to justify this though.
I'm excited for this!
@kmtrain83 they did a nice blue fire emblem 3DS so fingers crossed 🤞
Disappointed it seems to be a sequel to fire emblem 3 houses. I didn’t care for that game much. This game looks like it might not be crazy long like 3 houses but I am worried it will be bloated like 3 houses was. Very mad they put that stupid gambit system in the gameplay again. It was stupid and broken in 3 houses which I am glad they took it out in engage. Don’t know why they are putting it back in. Maybe this sequel will be distant enough that it doesn’t mention much from 3 houses but I don’t know. Even though I am a big fire emblem fan, I don’t think I will get this game. Sad to say. Just what I think.
@andyg1412
I don’t think we’ll get any revisions for at least a couple of years. I’m hoping for a Tomodachi Life Switch Lite bundle for my daughter.
DAY ONE! Never played FE series prior to Engage (I know, old school fire emblem fans think it’s crap) and I really enjoyed it so I am looking to play some more games in the series. This looks really awesome.
Wasn't the biggest fan of Three Houses as far as the mechanics and the map design goes. Really wish they could bring the mechanical design of Engage together with the aesthetical designs of Three Houses, cos that is really where engaged fell apart entirely.
Anyways, any FE is better than no FE and this really saved the Direct for me.
Going in I wanted a) way more patches (Xeno games!!) and b) finally that long rumored FE game.
I got none of that, but I got an entirely new FE game ... so it was not a total loss.
Otherwise the Direct felt like a weird mix of a something we had a long time coming and then was almost entirely filled with stuff we already new about and then pointless filler, straight out of a partner Direct Oo
Really hyped with this!!!
This new FE looks good.
Graphics needs some polish but so far digging what I'm looking at. I'm kind of hoping they're isn't a gender select. I get why they do it, the romance options, Besides they're an entourage. but I will always prefer something established than the sim stuff. I also think FE games need more than just a 3 year development cycle.
I both love and dislike this announcement.
Yay: More Fire Emblem!
Nay: I finally got to Three Houses this year and have only played one route (Azure Moon). I'd like to play at least two others. And I haven't even touched Fire Emblem Engage yet.
Totally my first world problem, I know.
Looks great! I really like the Roman-esque style the game has going for it. Since it looks like it's related to Three Houses, I do still need to complete the other routes (I'm working on Golden Deer after just finishing Crimson Flower). Hopefully it operates more closely to how Awakening and Echoes were rather than a direct pre/sequel.
Sold. I'm in. Toss me the keys to a triangle strategy.
They better not fck up the localization again
Hyped for this, and my bet is on a distant prequel not a distant sequel. An extra anouncement for a Switch 2 update for Three Houses would be the icing on the cake, but I suppose there is still hope they annouce such a thing in a future game centric direct.
I hope it'll go lighter on the social sim aspect that 3 Houses was so big on. Less of that and more battles would be great. Hopefully a better story than Engage!
I'm just saying, I want Fire Emblem and not Persona disguised as Fire Emblem.
Highlight for sure. This and galaxy 2( smh at the price though).
Alright that's convinced me to get a Switch 2!
Another five years of Three Houses discourse for some reason.
That aside, it really could be a sequel, or a prequel. There's evidence for both. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
Brand new Fire Emblem!!! By far the best announcement of the Direct and it's not even close. Was preparing for disappointment last night with all the speculation and rumors about an Awakening remaster or 3H NS2 Edition. (Great games, but nowhere near as exciting as a brand new game.)
Kinda makes sense for them to revisit the Three Houses universe given how it's the most popular game in the series. Was watching with my bro and he was the first one to notice the Heroes' Relics, then we saw the Gambits, and we both shouted when we saw Sothis!
Looks like there will be some downtime between battles to walk around 3D environments and do social stuff. Just hope they streamline that a bit. I liked using finite points to choose how to develop my units, but looking for lost items and gifts over and over...not so much.
Also, where's that Genealogy remake?! Hope that's still coming at some point.
I hope this is more like Three Houses, with the social simulation aspects, and less like Engage, which felt a little bare-bones.
Konami called; they want Alucard back.
If it's not like 3 Houses, I am out. I was hooked by the blending of strategy and relationship management. It was my second most played Switch game.
@AerosTactician To me, Sothis saying did you forget about me says sequel.
@MistressBrea I hope it will go heavier.
@Tyranexx Good News! Engage sucked compared to 3H.
To be honest I'm not feeling this one and I don't know y
@Misima So...you want a Persona game with a Fire Emblem coat of paint.
@Misima I've heard Engage has a ridiculous story compared to Three Houses (and most FEs), but I've heard the gameplay is amazing. Some of the best in the series, if an acquaintance who's a huge Fire Emblem fan can be trusted. I will certainly go into Engage with measured expectations.
Seems interesting and character designs are better Fire Emblem characters so far. Hopefully it turns out good.
@Supadav03 Disclaimer, old FE fan here : P
I've played FE4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and Three Houses (16?) which were all great! I heard about Engage first as a rumour and it sounded like a joke, imagine my surprise when it turned out to be real.
From the crappy character designs to the shallow story and weird pandering it was definitely one to avoid.
Anyway, main take-away is that you've got so much better to look forward to, from the looks of it! Either that or you really liked the Engage aspects and will find it jarring lol
@MistressBrea I want Three houses but more and well polished. 3H was more fun than engage. It was a great gameplay loop. It was two types of games that you might get sick of, but each time you get a good amount of time and then switch over to the other game but are stronger because of the other gameplay.
It was amazing.
This being the "One More Thing" had me howling. Can't wait!
At the beginning of the reaction video I made for the Direct I said that it would take a new Fire Emblem being announced to get me to buy a Switch 2, but that it would never happen.
Look where we are now
"Arid region" never been a fan of desert biomes in any game, hope it's not too generic.
Time to step it up, IS. I want to be excited for Fire Emblem again, and that means better writing, better world design, better maps, and less chores.
The dialogue in the trailer has already lowered my expectations. I expect I'll get the game, but I swear at this point it's more so that I can have my own opinions about the franchise's modern incarnations, rather than because I actually enjoy them.
Like with the Tales games, it's a motivation that won't last forever.
I know I'm late to the party on this article, but man... I love Fire Emblem so much and I am so excited to play this one! I'm curious if its a prequel or sequel though. A whole lot of Ashen Wolves references were found in GVG's video analysis!
