The latest trailer for Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade for Switch 2 has revealed the game's release date.
Those hoping to play it in 2025 might be slightly disappointed, as it's been confirmed for 22nd January 2026. It's not too far off, mind you, and judging from recent hands-on experiences, it sounds like it'll be worth the wait.
Final Fantasy VII Remake is the first in a planned trilogy from Square Enix. Its direct sequel, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, is available on the PS5, though a release on the Switch 2 wouldn't be entirely out of the question (this has now been confirmed!).
It's also been revealed that Remake Intergrade will be a Game-Key Card release on the Switch 2, as we'd anticipated. Not the best news for some folks, we're sure, but we're honestly just happy to see it on the system.

I've been on the fence about this one for years, but I think I'm finally sold now that it's on Switch 2!
Oh, that's nice, never played the remastered version so it will be perfect for a January release when things are a bit quieter.
I have this on PS4, but it's not the Integrade version. I haven't played it yet. What's the difference?
Honestly, My S2 system seller!
Can't wait to play this one!!
Welp glad I never opened my PS4 version lol.
@abbyhitter It adds a short side campaign. Internet says about five more hours of story in two chapters.
My brother will want to play this since he's obsessed with Cloud and Sephiroth in Smash. Looks good, hopefully any players enjoy it!
Definitely excited for this. I also hope we'll be able to get Final Fantasy VII Rebirth for the Switch 2, as well as the third chapter of the Final Fantasy VII Remake Project.
What's the deal with the "limited early purchase editions"? Anyone know? Are these discounted for pre-order?
@abbyhitter They added a character and content.

@Joe11 I think they just include the original Final Fantasy VII game to download now, I already have it so can’t pre-order these. Reckon the price will be the same @ £39.99 but without the free game later on..
Big day for annoying people.
Never got to play the remake before as I'm an Xbox/switch guy. But I loved the original back in the day, so I'll give this a spin.
Is this the largest game currently announced for Switch 2? 90GB is massive.
...GKC I had hoped they wouldn't..
I'll buy it on sale sometime. Would have bought it if it wasn't a keycard. I honestly thought this would be completely on a card because the game is a big enough title to warrent it, or aren't there 128GB size cards?
To simply store the game on Switch 2 would require about AU$35 worth of space! (Based on the AU$80 cost of a 256GB microSD Express card)
Surely a complete on cart release wouldn't cost anywhere near that much compared to the cost that's being passed on to the consumer as is (but this of course means that Nintendo would need to provide 128GB carts as an option for these monolithic games).
Having watched my kids play both the PS4 and PS5 version I was impressed with how good this looked. I wasn't a fan, they took the first 6 hours of FF7 and added in 34 hours of filler, but the ending was good.
I'm saying this about a lot of Square-Enix games lately, but: I'll buy it digitally in a year or two at half price. If Square is going to make me store all their games on my own overpriced memory card, they're not going to get $60 or $70 from me for their games. It's a shame: I'd rather be buying these games now at full price.
EDIT: Oh, it's 90 GB? Maybe I'll just pass on this game altogether and enjoy my memories of the original FF7. I've waited to play the remake this long. I can probably just skip it.
The Game Key card isn’t shocking considering this thing is a FAT 90GBs! Like, seriously, this might be the biggest S2 game thus far!
Looking forward to my physical copy to arrive and then playing it when I have the time for it - somehow haven't played any mainline Final Fantasy games yet, at this point I might start with this and then play the rest including the original FF7 (so glad most of those games are also on Switch and I've already got them so it's only a matter of me finding the time for them)!
square being lazy as usual going the game key card route especially with dragon quest 1/2 switch 2 version.
It's too bad the Game-Key Cards can't help with storage somehow. These file sizes are so much...
@LastFootnote FYI, looks like they're pricing this at $40.
256gb for Trilogy
Yeah, no. I would love to get this but not like this.
Couldn’t care less about it being a GKC myself and it wouldn’t have fit on a Cart anyway. Might wait for a sale though. I’ve considered buying a couple of times on PlayStation but never been pushed over the edge. Another on the maybe pile.
Game Key Card just seals the deal that I don't want this game.
90GB download? Thats smaller than the PS version right? What have they cut out
I LOVE the original, thank you
Hmm gamekey card is unfortunate but expected with its file size. (if 64 is the max as sources suggested) I never played before and didnt get the option before. But Ill be picking up. Not sure which way though. FFVII- over 20 years later, still not all on card cause of card size.
This is the first time I would semi-embrace going all digital with the bigger games. Previously I only go digital with indies. I would still buy physical whenever I can but if it's a game-key card I'll just download it digital instead as long as a I'm genuinely interested in the game. Times've changed.
@Paintfrenchy I read GKC as Gonkey Kong Country
Star Wars Outlaws, a current-gen game, was shrunk down to 25Gb, of course they could have compressed FFVII further to make it fit on a cartridge.
90GB.....wow....They need to make 2tb exSD cards sooner then later...or 4tb exSD cards...
Guys - this is $40 on Switch 2? Dang.
Oh, okay. I guess that's what it is everywhere. I assumed it would be more expensive, given all the work they put into it.
I wonder how many of the people complaining about the key cards went and purchased the digital version of Silksong.
Well, if it's a GKC, looks like I'll have to settle for it digitally. Which means I'm getting this on PC eventually. Since storage solutions are more manageable there.
@Joe11 Oh, wow! That's a pleasant surprise. I may reconsider, then. Thanks for the info!
@Dman10 Why? What does one have to do with the other? I hate Game Key Cards with a passion, but that doesn't mean I don't buy plenty of games digitally. Silksong is only 4 GB and costs $20.
As somebody who doesn't sell my games, a Game Key Card is strictly worse than a digital purchase for me, since I have to put in the card every time I want to play it.
@AussieMcBucket I believe it was $70 when it first came out, but the price has fallen over time. Still, I'm surprised they didn't hike it back up to $70 for this Switch 2 release.
@LastFootnote It does have to do with the other. Just pointing out how the physical game only people are never truly going to boycott something whether it is digital or key card if they really want to experience something (like Silksong).
Well, I'm pretty ok with my PS5 disc.
@Dman10 Who’s talking about boycotting games that happen to have Game-Key Cards? I was always planning to buy Silksong digitally for years. And it doesn’t even have a key card version? Whatever point you’re trying to make, I don’t think it’s coming across.
@abbyhitter There's also a much better lighting system throughout that makes many locations and scenes look much better than the original game
Well, there goes another purchase. I was ready to buy until those three words are spoken. There's like games I want to buy from this direct and I'm expecting 3 of them to have true physical editions. This is saving me so much money.
i cant wait! but im wondering, can you still get the free original game with a physical copy?
They didn't even bother trying to optimize the memory footprint of this game. It's apparently around 86 GB on PS4.
I would much rather have a little more texture/audio compression to get it under 64 GB to fit it on a cartridge.
But who am I kidding? Square Enix would cheap out and go for a Game-Key Card in that case as well.
Oh well, easy skip for me. No game is worth 90 GB of my internal storage space. I doubt I'd pick this up even at $10. That's just too much damn space.
@Dman10 I didn't pick up Silksong digitally. I'm waiting for the physical cartridge, just like I did for the original Hollow Knight.
87 gigs for switch 2 is a lot larger then i though this game would be i thought it could have fit on a 64gig switch 2 cart apparently not..
i will be very interested in how well these trilogy of games sell on switch 2 will nintendo only fans feel the love of final fantasy or has that love disappeared over time..
Full digital for me. I already find it annoying that Switch and Switch 2 have just one slot, and I hate having to swap cards over and over, let alone if I have to insert a card and keep the slot busy to play a game that's completely in the internal storage.
That file size is too crazy. This is one of the third party games I was most interested to see on a Nintendo console, but not sure it warrants half of your memory card. Like it looks awesome, but I can do without... If bigger switch 2 memory becomes affordable in the future then I'll check back in.
@SirLink I had been planning on going back to physical, was mostly digital on Switch 1. But the convenience of a handheld with digital games is just too much, whilst the physical version just sits on a shelf gathering dust. Fully understand folk who want it physical too though.
@LastFootnote Oh, okay. I know! Good news for all of us.
Anything on a Key Card is an automatic NO! Its a shame, since I was hyped for these games, but paying for something that will become a useless plastic garbage in the future?! Can’t support this:(
@1UP-HUSKY there are only 64gb game cards still, this is known. We still have no idea when smaller nor larger game cards will be available. If ever unfortunately.
@topsekret well any non Nintendo AAA games are mostly over 70gb if not reaching 100gb now unless they are smaller/shorter experiences. That's just where AAA games are heading.
Something like Star Wars Outlaws is as well but they brought it down via methods on Switch 2 to about 20-25gb. Currently on my PC it is almost 69gb of space. Not all companies try to compact them down or even CAN. Also Outlaws was made on a proprietary game engine snowdrop. And FF7 games are Unreal so probably also an engine issue it cannot be much smaller in size.
I just checked the Matrix DEMO on PS5 is 26gb. Unreal can bloat game sizes. And that's just a demo.
Does this suck absolute-damn-lutely. But there may not be if any options for FF7 Remake to get on a 64gb game card if it's well over that size. But I would still consider Square cheaping out here if it lands under 64gb digital, seems still something like they'd do.
@kuu_nousee If Ubisoft can reduce the file size of Star Wars Outlaws by more than 50% for their Switch 2 port, Square Enix could have done the same thing for FFVII.
It's absolutely not an engine issue. Most file size bloat comes from textures and audio. They simply just have to compress these assets more.
Square Enix themselves used to do this in their Switch ports. FFXII was around 40 GB on PS4 and is only around 13 GB on Switch. They could have reduced the size of FFVII if they wanted to.
My guess is because they were already committed to using a Game-Key Card, they just didn't see the point in optimizing. But now this decision has also screwed the game out of a potential LRG physical release in the future. (Unless Nintendo comes up with 128 GB cartridges in the future.) And it wastes nearly 40% of your internal storage should you decide to download the game.
I might just get the trilogy collection in 15 years on Switch 3.
@nuff64 That made my day.
