One of the biggest misses for me personally with the original Switch is that none of the more popular sports games of our time, and I mean these big EA and 2K efforts like Madden NFL 26 here, and the likes of FC 24 or 25, aren't up to standard seen elsewhere.
There have been decent enough-ish attempts, some of those footie games mentioned will do in a pinch (and they're leagues ahead of the awful legacy FIFAs which preceded them), but if you're someone who plays on Switch exclusively, you've been missing out on some fluidity, responsiveness, clarity of image, and a bunch of other stuff wot makes fancy modern sports games play good, innit.
And so, Madden 26 on Switch 2 is absolutely a triumph in most regards. It plays well, it runs decently, and it looks not too far removed from other console versions. I'm also playing the game on my PS5 in early access at the moment (forgive me, Mario), and so I can tell you that existing menu issues, long loading times, and/or a persistent issue that's locking me out of Madden 26 because the servers are busy, well, that's all happening on both systems.

It's lucky that I'm comparing it to PS5 here, actually, because I probably would have, and did initially, think it was all just too much, once again, for a Nintendo console to handle. However, this is not the case. Early access is just a little messy right now, pals.
Indeed, for a Madden effort that's really been impressing me thus far with its new additions (and a slick new overall look and vibe to its menus), it's a real shame that, if the servers are having any issues at all, the game is booting you out of whatever you are doing. Sort it before launch, folks, pretty please.
These teething problems aside, I think we've got a banger on our hands here; this is the best Madden I've played in a good few years. Now, Madden 25 was no slouch either, and in terms of its on-field action, it had got everything feeling better than it had done in years. Offensively, there was more time and room on the ball, runs felt easier to pick out, the AI was smarter in making them, and tackles with the hit stick had never looked or felt more impactful and powerful. We were already in a decent spot with this franchise, even if the modes on offer were getting a little stale.

With Madden 26, we've got improvements that make last year's effort immediately redundant to anyone who spends much time playing these things. And for newcomers, this is a fantastic Madden to get started on your gridiron journey with, because they've juiced the hell out of the tutorials. Oh yeah. The new training games and skill challenges here blow the old ways of learning out of the water. You earn some cool rewards, the challenges are actually fun, and the game does a much better job of pointing you towards things.
This refresh on the training front really does make it much easier to get to grips with, and it's worth old heads having a look around, too, and not just for all the rewards, coins, and all that nonsense. You'll probably also find yourself learning little things you didn't know. It's deep and it covers all bases (wrong sport, but whatever) with regards to taking you from how to run or pass, when to run or pass, how to make up yards, and all that basic core stuff, right through to fancy skills and strategies and things that my brain refuses to listen to.

On the field of play, it looks better than ever, which is no surprise, and although there's plenty of weird limb and funny collision moments going on thanks to the fancy new physics model, it plays a better game than last year, and you can feel that immediately.
Now, the first and really only issue with the Switch 2 version crops up here as the game is running at what I'm guessing is 40fps in both docked and handheld modes. In handheld mode, this feels absolutely 100% fine. The game also looks very, very close to other consoles when played on the Switch 2's LCD screen. I've given this the biggest test I could, playing games whilst alternating between a PS5 Pro and a Switch 2, and honestly, give it five minutes — ten minutes if you're grumpy — and you get used to the slight drop in slickness.
I should note here that there is a more important sticking point with the lowered frame rate, and that is cross-play being ditched on Switch 2. It's a shame, for sure, but an understandable measure given you'd be fighting an uphill battle against lots of Captain 60fps opponents.

Now, in docked mode on your TV, it's a bit more noticeable. The resolution drop makes the play-arts and other things that appear in-game look a little less refined, and the reduced frame rate takes a little longer to bed in with. Again, I've been switching between this and a PS5 Pro in 4K, so it's a harsh test, and for me the Switch 2 version of Madden 26 passes it pretty easily. This is a version of the game that I will very happily play when I can't get to my other console, and for gamers who only have a Switch 2, there's nothing in terms of performance or quality of the port that should stop you from picking this one up. Hooray!
Moving on, Franchise has been the one mode that I reckon long-time fans have felt needs a reboot most, and in this year's game it's definitely much better. This time out, you choose a coach philosophy to get you started (so you may choose to run with an aggressive, strategic, defensively-minded character - all based on real coaches and real data, apparently) before jumping into an improved character creation suite to make your manager look how you like. There's still not a devastatingly terrible widow's peak to make my guy look just like me yet, but I've found one close enough that I'm willing to let this slide - for now.

Everything about Franchise mode feels tidier this year. It's much more addictive to play, too, thanks to lovely things like new equippable abilities that can be unlocked with skill points and will change depending on what coach philosophy you are coming from. Franchise this year also has brand new presentation packages, with fresh halftime shows and presenter bits to camera, primetime TV-styled stuff, and lots of other bells and whistles, making for a game that feels way, way closer to watching NFL on the telly. Heck, teams even have their own entrances and pre-game presentations, and the jumbotrons and hoardings in stadiums are more exciting.
Weather now plays a factor in games, with hot climates making your little smashers tired more quickly - and while we're on that topic, the snow games look great. Yes, even on the Switch 2!. This is also a much faster game in general, and the new animation system (which I don't understand, but apparently it's got more branching so it can be more reactive in any given moment) makes it feel much closer to EA's other American footie game.
Indeed, I have also been playing lots of EA Sports College Football of late, and last year it was better than Madden. It was zippier and fresher, and it just felt like the more fun game to play. On the pitch it was more...expressive, let's say, and it blew Madden out of the water with its presentation, honestly.

This year, you can feel how both games are much closer, sharing lots of UI features and gameplay similarities, not just on the field, but in how all of the modes work and flow. And this is a good thing! It's much tighter this year, with both games offering a very high standard of action, and I can't say I can pick a favourite just yet between the two.
Away from Franchise mode, Ultimate Team is still an incredibly, dangerously addictive thing to get involved in. It took me about an hour to have my first actual match, as there are so many packs to open starting out. But I can't help myself with this kind of thing and I'm fully involved in the yearly grind for all the best cards. You already know if this mode is for you and — if you can control yourself — it's a blast, with a ton of ways to play both on and offline with your team of superstars. Team-themed rewards are also a nice touch here, with my Las Vegas Raiders getting lots of bespoke gear and profile items that match my fave team, which keeps me hooked way better than getting lots of random crap. Note, there is still lots of random crap, if that's what you are into.

Across the rest of the game, well, it's business as usual in terms of the crazy amount of modes there are to toy around with, all the usuals are here, with an almost endless array of offline and online ways to play. I do loathe how progression and rewards in some modes require an online connection, but at least you can create your franchise and whatnot at the outset so that you can have it work offline.
When playing online, it must be noted, there's also a world of difference here in trying to get a match. It all works just like it should - there's no Switch slowdown or waiting for an extra ten minutes because the images aren't loading in.
And so, overall, we've got a port that scared the bejeezus out of me initially. I really thought those early server issues and laggy menus were just more of the same for Switch 2 owners coming from a bevvy of bad ports on Switch 1. However, this is not the case. Madden 26 on Switch 2, once you get used to the drop in frame rate compared to elsewhere, is a perfectly good way to play this excellent outing - a version I'll happily play alongside others on more powerful hardware.
Conclusion
Server issues at launch aside, and with the loss of cross-play noted, Madden 26 is a very solid port of one of the best outings for this franchise in recent memory. Yes, you'll need to get used to a drop in the frame rate to 40fps on Switch 2, but it's a reasonable downgrade in order to get this type of game running as well as it does on a portable machine. It really is a very close match in all other ways to other consoles.
For newcomers, this is one of the best Madden games I've played in terms of teaching you the ropes, and for the returning hardcore, the improvements on the pitch, and with regards to presentation, should impress where its predecessor felt a bit lacking.

I'll get this on sale. Madden games are hit or miss, for me.
I haven’t played a Madden game since the second one on the Megadrive/Genesis…it’s come a long way since then. It’s also been a long time since I gave EA a penny. Good for people who want to play handegg on the go though!
Zero interest in this, but a great review to read regardless PJ 👍
I have no interest in this game, but I hope it does well as I'd really like EA to bring their NHL game over to the Switch!
Only ever played on my friend's PS5... Maybe I'll try it for myself!
Thanks for the review, while I'm not interested in this myself I'm glad to hear that it's overall great for those who are including newcomers (hope the server issues will be solved sooner rather than later, though) - it's nice to finally see Madden back on a Nintendo system first and foremost and even more so it being that good!
The last Madden game I played was on Wii U. It'll be fun to play again
Well I would, but I don’t have the space, do I.
If only it was actually on the cart, eh... 🤷🏻♂️
Oh - and no higher-end versions like other formats either. Kinda says sawn the hell off to me.
Blimey! This series on SNES wasn’t a patch on the Megadrive versions but it's great to see the game back especially since my team won the Super Bowl!
When is college football coming?
Requiring online on a handheld is completely crazy.
Very entertaining review. Price is putting me off a bit but I am very tempted by this. American Football has always been a perfect handheld game for me given its stop-start nature. Sounds like a really good port.
@MarioBrickLayer I’d love to see a new NHL game. Last NHL game I bought was on the GameCube…
I like football but I do not like games that try to look realistic. I like colors that pop and for my games to look like games. This looks pretty dull. Tecmo Super Bowl and NFL Blitz destroys this.
Seems like it's actually a pretty good sports game. Not for me because I don't particularly care for sports and don't like always-online a whole lot, but hopefully anyone who plays this enjoys it.
I’ll still get it, but always have to be online? How lame!
@Charlirnie this!!
@PJOReilly Could you please write more about offline and always-online? As in, are the parts of the game that should be offline... offline? And always-online, just for multiplayer parts, right? I don't get it from the review. Always-online, we all know how bad it sounds for a handheld.
Dang, could EA be getting their touch back?
@leo13 same
I just hope it floats sales in the US.
The cons don't seem enough to warrant an 8. Review reads like a 9. I watched a couple of youtube vids on it, and saw two very different experiences. One was not good at all, the other looked great.
Also - if you're going to upcharge for early access... maybe be ready for early access?
the online thing was a bug bear for me in both this and college last year. but the switch 2 is a disapointment that it needs online
Most Switch 2 players won't have to 'get used' to a drop in FPS to 40 as they won't have it on both consoles and so won't know any better. I get comparing to other versions is useful for those with multiple consoles but come on please can't we all primarily judge games on their own merits not while looking over the fence. Anyway, this is looking good and will be my first NFL game in several decades.
Let”s hope this bodes well for the upcoming release of EA SPORTS FC 26 for the Nintendo Switch 2.
Also, please EA, release NHL for the Nintendo Switch 2.
@WheresWaveRace
Unlikely to happen these days unfortunately. It seems no game, or hardware, can be previewed/reviewed/talked about anywhere without it being compared to something else currently available or coming in the future.
To be fair, that’s hardly a new phenomenon, it’s existed since the dawn of home gaming. I, like many of you, have been around for as long as computer/console/handheld/everything else digital gaming has existed and whether it was arguments in the playground, comparisons in print magazines or debates online, it’s always going to happen.
It’s possibly useful for those of us who are multi-platform gamers, but at the same time I’m well aware that any multi-plat game is going to look and perform better on my PS5 Pro, just as I know that my PC will look and perform better than that, I honestly don’t think we need to be told. But it’s going to happen regardless.
It would be nice if games were reviewed in a vacuum, compared perhaps only to how other games on the same system perform. There are doubtless millions more Switch/2 only gamers than there are multi platform gamers who also own a Switch/2 and I doubt they give a damn how it compares to another system because they only have one option to play it. So they’ll be happy with a, this is how it is on X system.
I know it won’t be for likely a lot of us here, but my sports obsessed friend group is stoked for this. This is great for S2.
Something tells me the Switch 2 sells will disappoint EA.
@Stwert I've had a cup of tea, taken a few deep breaths and re-read the review. I think PJ does a good job here and I appreciate the tech details. I just get a little hung up on this tech obsession that's in danger of sucking the fun out of games. I blame DF jk
I own Madden on PS5, playing it currently in early access. Pre-ordered a physical copy for my Switch 2 also. The ability to take the game on the go was reason enough for me to double dip. Glad we got a full fat version. Hopefully this will be a trend moving forward with all sports games. Really hope EA brings college football to Switch 2 next year.
@milonorth I’ve got 4 Switch 2 owners in my house and 3 of us have pre-ordered Madden. This is after buying the NCAA/Madden bundle on PS5.
We are very excited for this!
I might actually get this. I haven't bought a Madden game since the Wii, but used to LOVE it as a kid growing up. I thought NFL 2K was better at the end, but then EA gobbled the license up completely. I haven't bought an EA game in ages, but I feel like getting this just so they'll maybe make College Football on the Switch 2.
I'm sure they won't do it but I'm adding my voice to the others hoping for NHL on the Switch 2!
@Supadav03 There's a physical version for the NS2?
Online requirements for single player modes in games is a deal breaker for me. It's so stupid and anti consumer in my opinion. You shouldn't need to be connected to a server just to play franchise mode or something else that's single player focused
@WheresWaveRace
Yeah, I know what you mean. Personally I’m not overly fussed with it all, maybe because I started gaming in 1978 when graphics consisted of a couple of white blocks on a black background.
Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love high fidelity 4K 120+fps games, I really appreciate the artistry and technical mastery that some games and platforms can provide.
But, if my options of playing a game are limited to lower frame rates, lower resolution and reduced fidelity, I can still enjoy it so long as the core gameplay experience is intact.
I played the entirety of Doom, Doom Eternal, Spider-Man Remastered and more on my OG Switch and Steam Deck, cut off from all of my powerful systems, when we had to live in hospital for 8 months.
Many of the games looked and/or ran terribly, but they were still damn enjoyable to play.
At the end of the day my philosophy is the best version of a game is the one you have access to, simple as that.
Great review, thank you! I think you've convinced me to support the effort and try this. I haven't played a Madden for a long time, but I love your explanation about how deep the tutorial stuff is. That is what I have been asking (no one) for, for a long time. I'd love to learn more about how to play and how the sport works. Really enjoy your work on this site, thanks again!
We really need Nintendo to suss out the docked VRR situation as my understanding is that would make 40fps feel better. My TV is ready. But I don't have a pro football team and will be waiting for NCAA as a complete game on a cartridge (yeah, not going to happen).
No cross-play, always online and 30/40fps.
Sure sounds like an 8… oh wait
@Whirlwound Yes, I pre-ordered it from Best Buy. Ships on release day (annoying).
Well it’s a “key-card” so maybe I should say “physical”…🫠 but at least I can trade-in/sell next year once 27 drops.
If EA FC26 is confirmed to be 30/40 as well, as it seems from previewes, then EA will never see a dime from me… I could somehow excuse it on Switch 1, after years of legacy versions, but there’s no legit situation where a properly budgeted port of THE football ⚽️ game trades 60fps for something else when the power is there.
If it ends up being 60fps then I’ll ***** up and give them money on day 1, something I haven’t done in years for FIFA/EA FC
@DashKappei this site reviewed the 30frames per second FC games better than the FIFA 1080p 60fps. Go figure.
@sixrings Opinions. Again, I could kinda excuse it (but I didn’t buy it) on Switch due to it being a weak hardware and EA releasing a fully (?) featured FiFA for the first time on Switch. Can’t make that excuse for their Switch 2 release. Previous ones where merely roster updates for basically FIFA 15 on PS360, so I can see why NL review them like that: the score definitely reflected that and they’ve explained it in the review’s text.
How can you rate this an 8? I've seen several videos on YouTube, and the game stutters rhythmically every time there's a camera change or pretty much anything happening? That is unacceptable, who wants to play that way and why would you give it an 8 in this condition?
If EA released an updated but graphically similar John Madden 93 but with new teams and players I'd buy that. Make it £20
@PJOReilly
Great review, I was just wondering if the game has full feature parity with other versions? I saw a post on Reddit saying that the Scott Hanson halftime show wasn’t in the switch version but have seen conflicting info.
Okay so my second question If I buy Madden 2025, will I be able to play this game and say 2030? 2028? Or will they make me buy the new game because they turned off 2025 online servers?
And how come he did not mention the stuttering I just watched another video and it stutters like hell. I don't get how this reviewer just glosses over that fact
Probably a silly question, but in handheld mode with VRR, wouldnt 40 just go up to 120?
Personally I dont care if its 20, 50, or 80, its all the same to me. Cant tell the difference unless it's jumping around.
Since ill only play this portable and Ive been waiting for years to have a proper portable madden game(I got one on the steamdeck, and I also bought last years for my PS5 Pro so I could use the portal, but its not the same) , I am pretty excited about it. Review looks like its going to be a solid win. Hopefully next year we get college football so I can migrate over from the PS5 Pro version I bought this year and keep all my sports in one portable console. (I always buy multiple copies of nba2k so where it lands doesnt bother me)
@AllBLK You're saying that it's always-online for single player too?! On a handheld?
Sounds great for football fans.
Me, on the other hand, keep waiting for NHL. The coolest game on earth.
Shame about that GKC. Oh well. Now I can continue to not support this evil company. Haven't bought a game from them since Sim City.
Never forget that 2k was making a better product and they bought exclusive rights to the NFL and killed competition. They should never be forgiven.
Would definitely be interested if it was an Eyeshield 21 game but I'll pass!
@Gohanjin Ya—Ha—!! An ES21 game I would be all over. I was kinda hoping a series about Sena’s college years might have come from that 21st anniversary animation last year, but I guess Murata is still busy with One Punch Man…
@Whirlwound yes! Such an underrated manga/anime. We had enough of DBZ, One Piece and Naruto games. E21 could really shine in a Captain Tsubasa or Inazuma 11 style game.
Just to note, because Im seeing lots of chat about it, the slight stuttering that occurs on replays, and during some TD celebrations, also occurs on the PS5 in exactly the same way. So I expect it'll be addressed, alongside the server issue.
Again, as I said in the review, they really do have the same issues when it comes to those aspects. It's only the fps drop and the slighr loss in fidelity thats Switch-specific here, really. And the cross-play. Hope this helps!
No crossplay? Really? Oh, it's a small indie company EA we are talking about, of course...
Is it True that the game doesn’t load without a WiFi connection so if you try to play this in a flight you ate screwed
Just like in real life it seems, College Football is better than NFL and I hope the Switch2 (or as I heard it called the other day NS2, was odd to hear) gets a port of it
@Gohanjin I made this video based on it back in ‘07, attending AmeCon before running it proceeded to inhale my spare time. Won an award too.

Read this review and was like oh okay, I'll give it a shot.. Bought it, played about half a game in franchise offline then quickly called Nintendo support and returned it. This game is unacceptable, frame rate is all over, weird glitches like the helmets looking like a lumpy potato and an overall blurry looking image.
@Whirlwound Amazing AMV man! It would look amazing with updated resolution but I don't even think the anime had anything else than DVD's. And so sad that the anime didn't fully cover the manga and the games against the Hakushu Dinosaurs and against the team USA!
@Gohanjin Being done back in 2007 on a now-long-dead PC - never mind that I'm like 97.5% Mac-based these days - unfortunately the source files are long gone. Dunno why, but every time I've worked on a music video, Premiere has killed the OS of the PC it was done on...
I wasn't that keen on the World Cup arc of the manga. They could have done more with it - I think they were starting to run out of ideas (Militaria? And wasn't this a YOUTH World Cup - with Agon, Gaou and the worryingly-foreshadowing Mr Don?) - could have gone through to the Christmas Bowl in the animu though.
There was a Dan Marino reference in the Nagas game though, so far as I'm concerned the rest of it is golden.
Correction: 30fps docked and 40fps handled. I think playing handled is a pretty good experience overall. But docked is NOT. EAs could have used DLSS to achieve 40 or even 60fps easily. This is just lack of effort from EA and it's not acceptable. Nintendo made Nvidia DLSS available to developers intentionally, and EA ignoring the tools they have to make great game is frankly an insult
@Whirlwound maybe but the moment Kurita surpasses Gao in the manga for ex is one of my favourite (I still slightly prefer his famous final funuraabaaa against the Shinryuji Naga but still!). Mr Don is also like the Yujiro of E21 and see the guys managing to put him down was amazing!
@outsider83 That's a safe bet. They don't seem happy with anything Nintendo.
@Charlirnie As of right now? Never. They have no announced plans to bring anything but this Madden and the soccer game.
@sixrings
They did that because the FC games are much better, frame rate aside
I'm not really interested in this particular game but I read the review with genuine interest as I'm planning to get FC26 for my Switch 2 instead of PS5.
All sounds reasonably promising to be fair
As a huge Daytona USA fan/Sega Saturn fan I find all this talk about fps the equivalent of a mass temper tantrum.
I agree that people who are sensitive to these things shouldn’t buy this game but the anger and betrayal shown about everything not running 60 fps these days is embarrassing. God help these people if they ever have a serious problem in their lives.
@AussieMcBucket 🙏
@gazamataz it must be the new generation. I've skipped Madden for many years now, but going back to PS3 and prior, I don't think any of them ran better than 30fps. 8 can't imagine what these games would think of anything on N64, which regularly went sub 30. It's actually amazing how well you adjust going from 60 to 30 after mere minutes of play. We'd all like 60, but 30 is perfectly playable for everything outside of F-Zero type games.
@Danrenfroe2016 I was looking for this comment! I've watched a few YouTube videos and there was some frame rate stutter. I didn't see this mentioned in the review.
I am definitely getting this game. It’s been several years since I’ve played Madden. Is there any chance that this game could receive an update that would improve the frame rates, or, is the hardware being maxed out?
The amount of complaining and pure hate for everything about this system and its games is awful. It legit makes me not want to go on any sites and its starting to become the case with this platform as well. Its ridiculous to see for such an incredible system. This game is a fantastic game for a handheld and to see all the hate for everything about this system is Just sad to see
Madden on Nintendo... and it's good? Is that ice in hell...?
Might try! I know very little about American football 🏈 but it can be entertaining to play all the same.
I sorely miss NHL and a good Konami footer on my Nintendo consoles though, please bring more sport love game makers ;D
@PJOReilly
Echo Aussie comment! Much appreciate the review, but especially following up with clarifications in the comment section when speculation is abound 😅
Any relevance to the below comment? It doesn't mesh with your review, so wonder if this is for real or a troll comment 😂 Especially the blurry picture complaint. (I'm not sensitive to frame rates, but I did find Doom on Switch 1 too blurry for my taste - the only game I can remember feeling that way about)
"This game is unacceptable, frame rate is all over, weird glitches like the helmets looking like a lumpy potato and an overall blurry looking image"
@molkom I can see that some may find helmets (maybe!) a little blurry in docked. Not from resolution though. It doesn't suffer any sort of blurriness like that. Im really not sure what issue, beyond the stuttering I've mentioned - which is on ps5 too - and the lowered framerate, they are having. In handheld especially, its as good as i could have hoped it would be.
Docked takes a little more getting used to, but you do get used to it. And again, im flipping back and forth between this and PS5 Pro, and am fine with it. It could do with patching to fix bugginess in the game itself, but these arent switch issues. And if this is a starting point, they may well be able to patch it up or hit 60 down the line.
🤷♂️
@PJOReilly Did you check if the tv would flip to 1440p@120hz, like Street Fighter or Cyberpunk? Are you being offered performance/quality modes?
They would not target 40fps in a 60hz container, right? =S
@PJOReilly
Thanks a lot! ⭐
That settles it: I trust this is a fine game worthy of emptying my wallet somewhat "Doesn't suffer any sort of blurriness from resolution" is music to my ears since blur/smudgy resolution as per old Doom is the only red flag I'd care about (as long as frame rates are somewhat steady).
Keep up the mighty good work 👍
You know how after every Nintendo game which is rated a 9 or a 10 nintendolife asks its audience for their own ratings of the game in a poll…. They should do that for madden so we can see if the community agrees with this score or wishes their money back.
@DonkeyKongBigBoy that’s retrobowl (minus the license) Check. it out on switch, it’s awesome and it plays even better on switch 2
Game is a blast on PS5. I should've known the NFL wouldn't like getting 1-uped by a College Game. I think I'll get next year's version on Switch 2 but I'm glad EA is finally giving Nintendo customers access to the NFL. And apparently the game is selling VERY well on Switch 2!
@AZYotes5013 have to agree it's pretty pathetic. A lot of the time it's people who only sign up to whine and troll. Sadly negativity creates clicks.
Haven’t played a Madden since Madden NFL 2005 when by many accounts the series peaked, before EA bought the exclusive rights soon afterwards, killed NFL 2K, and then Madden spent 20 years getting progressively worse so that for the last few iterations Madden has been averaging Metacritic scores in the 60s (compared to 90s back in the PS2 glory days).
Anyway glad to see this promising start on Switch 2, don’t think I’ll be convinced enough to buy it until a few other outlets chime in with similarly good review scores.
It’s been wayyyyy too long since I played a good NFL game (started with Madden 64 in 1997 which taught me all the rules of the sport; I must have played that game for about 500 hours even though I’d guess it ran at 15-20 fps most of the time).
No cross play? That hurts.
Demand a refund immediately. The game is broken.
100% unplayable online.
Offline, it’s poor quality at best.
Do not buy, and if you have demand a refund asap.
Interesting, as the first Madden game on a Nintendo console since the Wii U launch game, as well as the first handheld Madden since the previous PS Vita one, there was so much to expect from this port... yet it makes some questionable decisions there. No cross-play parity is strange, I mean, even with half the frame-rate it's a huge blow for this version.
And then there's the fact it doesn't run at 60fps even when docked, even though previous entires ran at 60fps even on last-gen. What's holding it back, the fact it has the current-gen lighting engine? is it a CPU limitation? Are there bigger differences than previously though on current and last-gen?
It's strange, and right now there aren't many comparisons between platforms to see what's going on, and that's a worrying fact because it's speaking how many are actually buying this version... The moment they realize all these changes, it could affect sales...
I was so hype for this game, but consider it garbage. DO NOT PLAY FULL PRICE FOR IT! I don't think it's worth more than $10 to be honest. I feel ripped off paying $70. I REALLY wanted a good Madden game, but overall, this has been the worst controlling video game I've played in years, and the I feel like it is borderline shovelware. How did it get an 8 on here? If I was being GENEROUS I would give it a 3 out of 10. Maybe there is something I'm missing.
I hate that it takes 5 minutes to even get to the game because I have to go through the set up of an EA account JUST TO PLAY THE GAME OFFLINE. With all the lag and jitter when playing solo, why would I EVER torture myself with online play?
I need to look again for a tutorial, but seems very unintuitive for all controls. It's like playing football in wet sand.
Maybe I'm just going through "culture shock" since I haven't played a Madden in a decade, but I would rather play Madden on my Wii than this garbage dump. It's just not fun.
I will edit this and update it if I change my mind, but for now, I would highly recommend NO ONE buy this game unless you REALLY liked how good (BAD) Quarterback Club 1999 was on the N64 by Acclaim.
I think even if this game was $5, right now I'd say it is overpriced. I'll try again later this week and I really hope that it gets a patch to make it more fun and easier to play.
Oh, and to piggyback my last comment, even the menus are broken. If you go into look at the stats, you can only go one direction, unlike the older games where you could toggle between different positions by doing L and R buttons, this one you can only go one way. This is SO unintuitive and a huge step back. Also, on defense, you can only cycle through players one way, instead of being able to go back and forth between players between snap. Accidentally hit the button too many times (because of the lag), too bad. You now have to hit it 10 more times to get the player you want instead of just hitting another button once to go back.
This game seems like it was made by people that never played Madden. Again, I haven't bought one since the Wii, so maybe the "New Generation" likes this aggravation, but this has been the worst video game experience I've had for a $70 game ever.
If Nintendo allowed refunds, I would do it. How do even the LOADING screens have slow down and jitter? If the loading screen is so bad at scrolling, just put a static picture with a tip about gameplay.
Also, now way to cut out all the cinematic stuff. You have to hold down A to skip it. I've now conditioned myself to just hold down A after almost everything so I can get right back to the play call screen and sometimes it still shoes in an interstitial even though I held A. I just want to play the game with no fluff.
Also, game needs a huge tutorial for new players on all the clutter that they have. It seems I need to do 14 things each week before the game, from scouting to assigning attributes to everything else. There should be a way to just play the game and have the game automate all the clutter that we don't want or need. I get that there are people that WANT to assign their scouts to different sections, but it's something I have no urge to do. I know this seems like a rant, but I just want people to understand what they are getting into before they buy the game.
And if I'm wrong on any of this and there are options to fix the things (especially turning off all the fluff between plays), please let me know. Thanks.
