Even though it confirmed my suspicions, the reveal that Donkey Kong Bananza was coming to us from the team behind Super Mario Odyssey couldn't help but strike a little bit of fear into my heart. We know that the group within Nintendo EPD is a talented bunch, but how was I ever going to be able to fully throw myself into another 3D adventure, with the all-timer 'Jump Up Superstar' sequence lurking at the back of my brain?
This was my overwhelming thought as I made my way through Bananza's opening layer. It was all fantastic, but I couldn't shake the feeling that I'd seen these slick moves and shiny object hunts before, albeit with a touch more punching this time around.

And then it happened. Rather than following the suggested approach, I ripped up a chunk of earth, solved a puzzle in a way that I never expected to work, and laughed as DK goofily ooh'ed and ahh'ed at the reward. On the surface, Donkey Kong Bananza has more than a little Odyssey in its DNA, and the comparisons are on display right from the jump; but once I dug beneath, I realised this is the devs swinging for something more chaotic, more destructive and — dare I say it — at times, more entertaining. Simply put, it's the most fun I've had with a platformer in years.
DK storylines generally go as deep as 'Big monkey loses big banana hoard', and Bananza doesn't stray a million miles from that format. While mining for Banandium Gems (Are they rocks? Are they fruit? I'm still not sure) on Ingot Isle, ol' DK has his collection ripped from him before being plunged underground by the Void Company, a mining operation bent on reaching the planet's core to have their deepest desire granted.
It doesn't make too much sense, but nor did a sentient cap with eyes, so stay with me here. Keen to catch up with the terrible trio and get his bananas back in the process, DK stumbles across Pauline — the artist formerly known as OddRock — who assumes the position of back companion and quickly learns that she can assist the titular tie-wearer through the magic of... song.
The pair dive through a series of underground worlds, or Layers, in pursuit of Void Co., collecting straggling Banandium Gems, helping out the locals, and picking up shape-shifting Bananza Transformations from huge underground Elders on the way, all in the hope of reaching the core first.

It's a simple, if somewhat ridiculous, set-up that only really comes into its own in the game's later stages, but it provides a strong enough backbone for the gameplay, and that's the important part.
Much like Odyssey's cap-throwing, Bananza has a big new mechanic to get to grips with in the shape of DK's fists. Equipped with nothing more than his primate palms, DK can punch, dig, and throw just about anything that he can see through the magic of Nintendo's voxel tech experimentation — which you might remember from the cheese digging in Odyssey's Luncheon Kingdom. Bananza wastes no time introducing you to this newfound strength, with the opening tunnels of Ingot Isle serving as little more than a demonstration of just how much you can smash. And boy, did I put it to good use.

To my own detriment, my first hours were spent doing just this. I couldn't bring myself to follow the mission marker because what if there was something under my feet? Nintendo's promise of everything being destructible holds true (mostly), and there's a certain dopamine hit to be had in levelling a cliff face just for the sake of it, but it quickly loses its impact if that's all you're doing.
And I think Nintendo knows this. I eased up on the 'Punch' button, put DK's smoking fists back in their holsters, and started to see Bananza differently. Because yes, everything can be broken, but that doesn't mean everything should be. Each layer is set up not to be destroyed, but to be explored, and I soon learned that while the odd Fossil or Treasure Chest may be waiting underground, the real attraction lies in the creativity on top.
When you put the digging to one side, DKB is all about the platforming. DK has a silky smooth moveset, consisting of three directional punches, a jump, a roll, and a hand slap. Oh, he can also climb just about any vertical surface in front of him. If that sounds pretty pared back, it is, but there's sweetness in that simplicity.

You can roll, jump, and roll again to clear more ground, rip up a chunk of earth and surf on it, then throw said chunk into the ground to double-jump all without pausing for thought. Bananza has a fast travel system, but I found it much more enjoyable to take the scenic route on foot.
That's not to say that digging and punching don't have their place — they are absolutely the headline mechanic — but if, like me, you feared Bananza would be nothing more than a smashathon, you can rest easy knowing that it's quite the opposite.
You see, each layer brings a new idea about how DK should use his surroundings. Whether it's surfing over slime in the mud-filled Hilltop Layer, growing paths in the Forest Layer, or pulling up chunks of floating Liftoff Ore in the Resort Layer, each level of DK's early descent demonstrates another way to get around, with none sticking about for long enough to become frustrating.

All of these introductions serve their purpose, too. The second act feels like Nintendo firing on all cylinders to up the inventiveness, and it uses your base understanding of the game's ruleset to showcase even wackier ideas. Part of the joy is finding out how these all work yourself, but rest assured that by the end, the uncanny Bananza Transformations will feel like old news compared to some of the originality on display.
Would you look at that, I made it 1,000 words in before touching on the abomination that is DK's Bananza forms! In truth, I never warmed to the sight of Donkey Kong melded with an ostrich or a zebra, but the devs needed to work in Mario's Power-Up prowess, and the time limit given to each transformation meant I didn't have to look them in the eye for long.
Kong Bananza is your Hulk-like big hitter and can crush just about any material with ease. Zebra Bananza is all about speed, and Ostrich Bananza can momentarily fly through the air when you inevitably see something shiny glimmering in the distance.
At first, each form felt a little too overpowered, particularly in the early boss fights, which are proper blink-and-you'll-miss-'em affairs if you have the right power-up equipped. Fortunately, things calm down in the later game and into the post-credits content (of which there's a lot), where the transformations feel like more of an integral piece of the puzzle than an OTT superpower for a quick insta-win. Heck, the difficulty of some of the later challenges, particularly the boss fights, had me wishing for that earlier sense of ease.
What's more, they feel strangely at home in Bananza's world. Walking the same path as Odyssey, each layer down to the planet's core presents a different flavour of off-the-wall weirdness. There are ice cream-loving zebras who all talk like frat boys, googly-eyed 'Fractone' rocks that look like they've been swept off the Rare cutting room floor, underground eels that will spit you between layers like a slimy Tube train. And DK reacts to it all with such a wonderful range of expression. He'll shiver in cold areas, sweat in hot ones, and you'll want to pay particular attention to how his interactions with Pauline shift as their relationship changes. No, you're crying at an idle animation.
All of this means that each layer is a pleasure to explore, which is a relief, because they are packed, and I mean packed, with things to do. Odyssey's Power Moons are succeeded by Banandium Gems picked up in main story missions or by exploring the surroundings. Battle and Challenge Ruins crop up on every corner, too, shuffling a certain BOTW Shrine-esque pit stop into the proceedings, and occasionally calling out specific DK touchstones like Mine Cart Madness or Bramble Blast to brilliant effect.
Which reminds me, Bananza's score is wonderful — stay with me for this quick musical sidebar. The atmospheric environmental tunes are one thing, but Pauline's Bananza songs are some of the catchiest damn bops I've heard from a game for a long time, which is a relief, because you'll hear them every time you want to transform (you can turn it off in settings if that's not your jam, don't worry). I dare you to listen to Kong Bananza without throwing in a little shoulder shimmy whenever you hear the main riff. And yes, much like those aforementioned Challenge Courses, there are musical cameos aplenty, so make sure you've brushed up on your Country music — and we don't mean Dolly Parton — before diving in.

Anyway, back to those bananas. The Gems serve their in-game purpose well enough — collect five to unlock a Skill Point, which can be used to level up DK's stats, Bananza Transformations, or grant some bonus abilities — but we all know they're really there to encourage exploration. Nintendo has crafted gorgeously detailed worlds, and it would feel like a waste if all I did with them was dig. Instead, the collectibles encouraged me to scour every corner and speak to every NPC, all while keeping things completely optional for those who'd prefer to storm ahead with the main quest. There's no 'Collect XX Bananas to power up the Odyssey' to see here.
I picked up around 600 gems throughout my roughly 35-hour playthrough (it would be much shorter, had I not been such a fiend for shiny collectibles), and I know that even more are still waiting. That's not to mention the Fossils, Smashin' Stats, and Outfits, all of which are calling me back for that sweet 100% completion.
And then there's the entirely optional sculpting DK Artist mode, which gobbled up more of my time than I was expecting in my crude attempt to build DK a Waluigi hat. The tools are deeper than I had imagined, and it's nice to see Mouse Mode in action, though it doesn't add much to the overall experience other than the worrying thought of what people will do with that poor banana model. Still, it's a nice little addition.

I spent the majority of my time playing solo, but you can bring a pal along for the ride to make the collectathon that bit more manageable. The co-op is more Mario Odyssey than 3D World. Player two stays tethered to DK as Pauline, and is on hand to dish out attacks and pick up collectibles.
It's a perfectly pleasant time playing with two adults — even if the option to have both players control the camera feels like a mistake — but it really feels designed for a parent-child paring, where a less-experienced player can still be part of the adventure without having to worry about all the pesky platforming and punching. You can even try this out between Switch 2 and Switch 1 systems via the magic of GameShare, though I wasn't able to test this during the review period. Elsewhere, an Assist Mode accessed from the menu at any time can make DK's health last a little longer and point you in the right direction. There are also tools for button remapping, language options for Pauline's dialogue (though the text language is set at a system level), and subtitle toggles.

For the most part, Donkey Kong Bananza is a prime example of the Switch 2's beefed-up performance, running at a smooth 60fps for most of the time, with some genuinely stunning vistas and a nice touch of that swanky 3D audio thrown in for good measure — you'll hear the gramophone of a safe Getaway and know exactly which direction to head. The destruction left in DK's wake is permanent (until you leave the layer or opt to reset the terrain, that is), and while the environments don't obey the real-world laws of physics to the letter — you can punch through the base of a tree and the rest of the trunk will remain standing — some sections see hundreds of objects, each with their own physics, realised on screen at once, lifting the lid on a new console generation in style.
It's truly impressive stuff, but there are some hiccups along the way. More intense digging sequences see the camera get a little squiffy as it tries to realise DK without showing the underground areas around him. Distant textures lose their detail, and speeding towards them reveals pop-in aplenty. And, when you really put the game through its paces in the later layers, where new paths are being created, destroyed and moved all at the same time, the frame rate takes a noticeable dive before springing back.
All that said, it didn't come close to ruining my experience. This is an ambitious game where you can head in any direction at any time, make or break new routes to your will, and tear up the terrain knowing full well that the damage will still be there next time you come back.

So, can I say that Donkey Kong Bananza is better than Super Mario Odyssey? No, I can't. And honestly, what is? But if you loved Jumpman's planet-hopping adventure, you'll have no shortage of smiles on this underground descent.
Conclusion
Donkey Kong Bananza is an almighty re-introduction to the world of 3D platforming for DK, and arguably the Switch 2's first absolute must-play. The punching and crashing is a passing novelty that, once you get your fill, quickly becomes just another way of exploring the wonderfully varied and beautifully presented layers.
Whether it's smashing through the scenery with a Bananza Transformation or carefully planning a route to a hidden Banandium Gem, you'll have trouble finding more originality and, crucially, more enjoyment from a platformer in recent years. As the DK Rap so wisely said, "Donkey Kong is here." Now let's just hope he stays.

9 only because performance hiccups? Is that the only negative, because many other 10/10 games like BOTW had that.
From reading the review, seems more like a 10/10 but I guess I’ll see for myself tomorrow!
I feel like Mario is just a different kind of game than Donkey Kong.
DK, Donkey Kong is here! And how! Can't wait to get started on the game, but I'm not getting it day 1. My backlog is huge and I need to finish at least 2 games before I am allowed (by myself) to buy a new one...
"Can it beat Mario Odyssey?"
Man everything's a competition between these two! :3
Amazing review jim!!! so it looks like its shaping up to be an all time great, even with its little technical issues. man, shame there isnt actual dolly parton, but excited to play it tomorrow! DK!

Knew this would be a hit as soon as i saw the first gameplay! Got mine preordered. Should be shipping tomorrow!
He's finally back, and about time too
The biggest criticism I see of Mario Odyssey is related to the moons and how watered down they feel to get considering the number of them, unlike the stars in Mario 64 for example.
I'm wondering if there is any similar feeling in this game with regards to the collectables? I suppose this is a question for Jim or someone that has already played it.
“Big DK Energy” was brilliant.
Looking forward to this one lads and ladies. Next gen Nintendo is finally here!
After the 9 that NL granted Mario Kart World, I'm gonna have to take this review with a pinch of salt. Especially as Jim tends to be one of the more forgiving reviewers on this site.
It looks like it's a good game but I didn't think Odyssey was 'all that', so I was hoping DKB was going to be an objectively better experience.
NEVER DOUBTED THE GREAT APE FOR A SECOND BABY WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Its unfortunately going to be a very long time until I can get my hands on Bananza due to not having a Switch 2 but as a huge fan of Mario Odyssey, I can already tell that its gonna make for one hell of a console introduction 🔥
9/10 is a very solid score of an excellent game. But it also means that it lacks the special sauce that 10/10 games get. I do wonder if Bananza is therefore lacking that gameplay variety or if that loop gets a little stale in the latter half of the experience.
@Ellie-Moo That was my issue with Odyssey, there were just so many moons and collecting them didn't feel satisfying enough. I'm hoping that the skill point system in this game helps in that regard.
@Axecon Very excited (i.e. fearful) for Bananza to go through the exact same cycle as Mario Odyssey did back in the day:
Wow, actually scoring down because of performance issues in a first-party release? Is this the same Nintendo Life I've been visiting for years?
Hopefully y'all have that same energy if the next Zelda is chugging as much as BotW and TotK were in spots.
"arguably the Switch 2's first absolute must-play"
Oof, that MKW swipe!
Thanks for the review, love to have further confirmation that Bananza is practically Odyssey with its own DK twists including being overall just as good if not even better than that at times and I seriously doubt the odd performance hiccups etc. will particularly bother me if at all - so looking forward to playing it myself as soon as my copy arrives (unfortunately not until next week as my usual retailer is busy starting from tomorrow and for all the upcoming weekend at the convention I'm also going to so they'll send it at the start of next week)!
So good to see the universal acclaim. Can't wait to play this
Reads like a 10?
Seems like another banger from Nintendo!
90 on metacritic currently, not too shabby at all!
Gorilla can jump
Gorilla can climb
Gorilla's new game
Only got a 9
Gorilla don't like
Gorilla gets mad
Gorilla smash everything
Gorilla is sad
Gorilla find girl
Gorilla hear song
Gorilla steal girl
BOLO out for Donkey Kong
Call the police

I don't know where I'm going
With this silly rhyme
I'll have to stop it here
It's the end of my lunchtime.
@YunoboCo I love the new look. It’s got loads more personality.
I'm really relieved that reviews did actually happen pre-launch, did wonder if Mario Kart World and Welcome Tour were going to set the new norm for 1st party game reviews.
Still waiting for the ability to buy a 1TB express card before getting a Switch 2 but really excited to play this game when that finally happens.
Expected nothing less from the people who made Oydessy. Can't wait to play it in a few days.
Y'all win the reviews with that sub-title.
Removed - flaming/arguing
@Maxz what are you talking about? I read joys and cons first, but there’s really not much complained about I saw in this review.
I was just stating my opinion based on the review, if this review/opinion can be stated, I can give my 2 cents as well
The Joys and Cons are there for a reason as well, if someone doesn’t have time to read the full review, it’s a good summary. Is this not a good summary? Does it not do a good job of showing this game’s complaints?
For whatever reason this game has not captured my interest. I’m happy it seems like a great game and maybe if it goes 30% off in a future sale I’ll pick it up.
That subheading hahaha!
Just pre-ordered from the eShop. Excited for another Switch 2 exclusive. Ready for some new experiences. This seems like a great pick up-and-play game. Love Odyssey so I know this will hit well for me too.
IGN gave this a 10/10- their first 10 in over a year. For comparision, Astro Bot ( game of the year) got a 9.
From what i have seen, this game can even top zelda lol. Its been a long time i have been this hyped about a DK game!
My body is ready for some DK destruction time!!!!!
@JRiegler
What really? IGN? A 10/10 how is that even possible. I have to check that one out 😋
@Jack_Goetz right. Odyssey was good but it has many faults (moon tedium) and is not even the best Mario game or anything. If this is considered to be worse than odyssey then I am bracing for disappointment
Can’t wait til tomorrow this is what my switch 2 has been waiting for.
91% on metacritic now so glad most concur with NL!
@YunoboCo Digging for garbage must be hard work - especially if you have nothing to really contribute except for the most basic and boring armchair art critique
I had it preordered for a while assured that no review could dissuade me from having fun with but it's always good to hear from a trusted source that this going to be a stellar game.
Now, with that out of the way, what have you done with the subheading, Jim!?
it should be getting an 11/10, bonus points for the dropping frames feature that make the gameplay better.
About the performance.
The framerate drops pretty brutally, down to 30, and sticks to that, during some FX heavy bossfights. It's really jarring when it happens, as it's mostly 60 otherwise.
And no, this is not something you can blink and miss.
And it's yet another game, where they don't use VRR, to smooth out those drops...
Mario Odyssey = Mario throws the cap to possess other object or creature.
Donkey Kong Bananza = Donkey Kong smash everything like HULK
1/10 too much banana. Literally unplayable.
Can’t wait to get my copy and amiibo tomorrow!
@Exerion76 waiting for a Switch 3 performance boost before I play
Removed - flaming/arguing
Removed - flaming/arguing
The game may only be a 9, but the "Big DK Energy" tagline is a 10/10.
Except for the framerate problems, the game itself (too ME), is much more fun to play, than Odyssey. The pacing is better overall.
I just hope they can improve the performance, with a patch.
@YunoboCo why do you feel the need to make the exact same "new DK is a blight on humanity" comment every time the game is brought up
Removed - flaming/arguing
I want to experience that big DK energy
@N00BiSH Ugly DK obviously equates to a bad video game. Duh. /s
This reads to me like it could be Switch 2’s GotY. Sounds like it may be a 10/10 for me too. I can’t wait to play this!
"Country music — and we don't mean Dolly Parton" 🤣
Anyway, I was actually guessing that this game would get a 9/10, it appears that I was correct!
Removed - flaming/arguing
I was intrigued, then interested, then sold, now excited! Will grab a copy tomorrow and, ahem, dig in!
Removed - flaming/arguing
@Axecon I recommend reading Eurogamer's review for those answers.
Awesome stuff. I can't wait to pick up my copy tomorrow.
@PikminMarioKirby A bit weird considering Xenoblade X had worse performance on Switch but they gave that 10/10.
I'll be getting my copy tomorrow, super excited to play this
I’m body and so is my ready.
Good review, and it's good to see someone who actually gives Mario Odyssey the respect it deserves, which is strangely rare
@YunoboCo those are different.
Glad to see this turned out well. The exploration and destruction is right up my alley. It's not going to make me buy an S2 right now (waiting for a revision with better battery life), but it's good to know the back catalogue has at least one must-have title by the time I do.
After conquering every Country, 64, Jungle Beat, and Odyssey before this, I'm ready to expand dong one last time!
This in itself makes grabbing each collectible a puzzle/challenge, and if the team somewhat followed what they did in Odyssey, that's a brand new game to explore after you beat the final boss. As I love collectibles in platformers, I consider this a treat
I love that freedom and level design when it comes to platformers. It makes each stage a whole new world that needs to be absorbed before you can master it
If that's the kind of Droid we're looking for, we just won't be happy with hardly anything. Great level design, creativity and the reinvention of a classic character that deserves all the love in the world suffice.
And I like that the reviewer pointed the frame drops as a con. I'm not sure that's what made it a 9 instead of a 10, but although I'm not expecting anything to run perfectly (virtually nothing does even on PS5), we deserve top notch optimization
I guess I'll be buying it day 1 after all
Can’t wait to play this.
@Fizza Yeah, I never understood that. It's an objectively incredible game! I think its a vocal minority of completionists that want to 100% every entry in a given series. The common complaint is simply "Too Many Moons," and I think that's simply remedied by pacing oneself over the game having too much to collect, lol.
Anyway, really looking forward to Donkey Kong Bananza. Not getting it Day 1 since I have too much play on Switch 2 already but will still get to it later this year!
Obviously haven't played this yet but I am expecting to like it more than Odyssey. The problem with Odyssey for me wasn't that it was bad, it's that it wasn't as good as Galaxy 1& 2. I kept waiting for Odyssey to have the creativity of the levels in Galaxy but it never did.
I don't think I'll like this more than Galaxy as a platformer, but throw in the story and the destruction and this could possibly become my favorite first party Nintendo game. Which is setting myself up for failure and disappointment I know, but that's how I feel so far. I've been waiting 20 years for a proper follow up to Jak & Daxter Precursor Legacy and I think this might be it.🤞
Still need a Switch 2 first though. This game was going to be my birthday present.😢
@Mr_Zurkon You named yourself Mr Zurkon you just gotta be looking forward to this one. That robot is a running gag in our house.😂
@N00BiSH so people are only allowed to speak positively about DK’s new design? I don’t see why there is any issue with me saying that I dislike the new design.
I don’t see why it is any different, both people are talking about their opinions and experiences
they did give mario kart world a 9 score as well and we know it is not a 9 game..
I can’t wait to play, this weekend. Love the character and its wonderful selection of games from the past.
@YunoboCo people are well within their rights to express their distance of something, but if you're going to do so - constantly I might add - the least you can do is articulate your dislike in a more constructive sense. Otherwise you're better off not saying anything at all.
Switch 2 is starting to get a few must have games, Donkey Kong Bananza, Mario Kart World, Fast Fusion, along with Kirby and the Forgotten Land + Additional content next month. It's getting nearer to a must buy.
We need a direct now to give us a roadmap of the rest of the year for Nintendo to show us how they plan to keep things exciting going forward...
@MTMike87 Yeah, I think similarly to BotW and TotK, you just have to give up the 100% completeist mentality as the games are just too damn big.
Complaining about how many moons there are or how many Koroks there are is a bit silly since getting all of them is purely optional and it's not like you get a particularly great unlock or anything anyway.
IGN gave it a 10. Seems like all scores are landing on a damn fine game regardless of a 1 point difference here or there.
Can't wait 👍
Is that last screenshot from a GBA game?
it is currently holding at 90 on metacritic most of the main game reviewers have it at the 90 score eurogamer only gave it a 80 one main critique was the repetitive boss battles..
Spicy subheading!
Great review - lots of laughs and well written!
Has this joke already been made? If not, please spread it around, because I think it's perfect:
Given the similarities in basic mechanics to Volition's game, I think we can refer to this as RED FACTION: GORILLA.
Odyssey this and Odyssey that.
Come on! Odyssey wasn't even the greatest Mario game.
Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World and Super Mario 64 all made a bigger impact at their own respective point in time.
They say you can't compare apples and oranges, but those oranges were better oranges than that apple called Odyssey will ever be.
It's interesting that Nintendo ran so far from Wii U (understandably so, as much as it saddens me) yet they can't quite top the "system sellers" of that console over a decade later (MK8 and BOTW, both easy 10/10s. ✌️)
Yeah. That's a 10 out of 10 for me. Gonna hop on this over the weekend.
@AussieMcBucket I did see this in the comments of SkillUp's preview but it's a goodun
IGN thinks it might be better than Odyssey (gave a ten and commented at end of video). I look forward to deciding for myself.
Most important is that it's not all about the smashing, with movement and platforming taking priority. So looking forward to this.
@Duncanballs Also the reviewer explained why it got a ten. He genuinely loved it; one of his favourite games of all time. Not quite a Mario Odyssey, but pretty damn close.
@Aneira
I agree that Odyssey is somewhere in the middle of the pack for Mario games. 👍
@Fiergala Oh yeah? Well good. It should get passed around. Haha.
@The_Nintend_Pedant I agree with your agreement
This sounds amazing! When I get my first job I must ave up for a switch 2
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRX0Ep7gacQ digital foundry review
@AussieMcBucket It is basically true, games were moving towards really robust destruction physics round that time then just... stopped for some reason.
I get the comparisons to Odyssey because of sort of a similar design philosophy - though it could just be said that they are both 3D platformers, at that - and because of the shared developer. But why exactly are we trying to compare this to the Mario game in terms of quality and enjoyment and all that? This is a brand new 3D platformer for DK! Let's give it some proper due! It sounds fantastic, and we can leave it at that. Why not compare it to DK64? XD

@AussieMcBucket
red faction was definitely on my mind when i first saw the breakable environments since that is definitely a franchise which comes to mind.
I didnt put things together and realize how apt red faction:gorilla is though but i agree that it needs to spread!
@Fiergala Yeah, good point. Maybe the processing requirements became too much of a strain? Or maybe most companies couldn't figure a design around the mechanic.
@Mgalens Same! And yes, thank you!
Wont read the review till after playing it, but a 9 is a good sign!
Good to know that it's overall great, hopefully those performance hiccups can be patched out in the future.
Digital Foundry have reviewed, pick out it's graphical flaws but overall give it a thumbs up.
@AussieMcBucket It's a mystery. Battlefield Bad Company 2 and 3 had the best destruction in the series before it was subsequently nerfed in basically every game. Actually being in a house as the supports collapsed due to explosives was so f-ing dope.
@Fiergala That sounds crazy! Yeah, it definitely adds to the realism, for me. I remember being amazed by it with Red Faction.
Thank you for the review! I think I may just bite the bullet and give this a try. I'm usually not into platformers (or DK for that matter) but everything about this game looks charming.
@AussieMcBucket BF was a pretty special series round that time, so many memories crouching low as a jet sends a supersonic wave overhead or a mortar bombards a hill, feeling like an ant, just like real soldiers. It's only really gotten worse since, there was a vid on how the most recent one has terrible physics and collisions compared to the ten-year-old entries, tanks just glide over the ground without any sense of physicality, embarrassing...
Big DK energy is the vibe for today.
A 9 out of 10 for Nintendolife and IGN gave it a 10 out 10... what gives? I thought all Nintendo games got a perfect 10
I’m always happy when a good game gets a 9 and not a 10.
10/10 games come along once every 10 years or so.
This keeps expectations realistic 👍
Just as I thought. Giving Zelda and Odyssey perfect 10s even though they had far more performance issues. DK? Nah we'll give you a 9 instead.
NL should just stop giving review scores. Everyone is discussing the number and not the review, and it happens every time.
@Fiergala Wow, that sounds way more interesting. I'd love that attention to authentic detail. Talk about immersion!
cant wait to pick mine up tomorrow but cant play it till i get a switch 2.
Great review! Already had a feeling this was gonna get a good score unfortunately it might be a while till I can play it since I don’t have a Switch 2, but I’m excited to hear what fun everyone else is gonna have when playing it!
Lol, big DK energy.
Anyway, I look forward to playing this in the distant future, whenever I get around to getting Switch2.
@OldManHermit
The DK-heads are going crazy for this one!
Roll on midnight. Going to have a slightly drunken first play of bonanza.
@DaGoldenBoo
I will never stop rooting for this company ❤️
(Which is not the same thing as cheerleading for them ✌️ I like when they genuinely impress me, and when it happens, I say so.)
I mean, I never played Odyssey nor did I ever care to. THIS however has me excited.
IGN gave it a 10. Performance hiccups pushed it to a 9? Graphic whores.
The word "barrel" does not appear one time on this page, until now, and that is a problem for me. 🫤
I've said it before, but "Wario's Oddysee" would be a better match for this concept IMHO.
EDIT - I looked it up, DKB apparently has barrels 😅 it's still amazing to me that they didn't come up in the review or seemingly any of the coverage or comments I've read here about this game. ✌️
A 9 is pretty much what I expected! I've been sold on this game since we first learned about it. I'll be happy to pick this up the same day I finally cave for a Switch 2. I'll just dream of tearing up the scenery as DK in the meantime.
@PikminMarioKirby Going from 60 to 30fps is a lot more severe than what Zelda had as far as performance issues go. That's a huge and jarring drop. Especially for a 3D platformer, which Zelda is not. I think it is completely fair to give the game a 9/10 for that alone. Doesn't ruin the game obviously, which is why it is still a 9/10 game. And a reminder that a 9/10 is very very good indeed.
@Drummertist
"IGN gave it a 10. Performance hiccups pushed it to a 9? Graphic whores."
1) IGN has been trash for over a decade.
2) 9 is a solid score, if they gave it a 10 just because you or IGN said so, that wouldn't be very objective, would it?
3) performance goes beyond "graphics." Graphics means "visuals," do you really think framerate is a superficial factor that has no impact on gameplay? I don't think I saw any complaints about "graphics," per se. Rather, they praised the visuals themselves to the heavens! ✌️👍
@The_Nintend_Pedant there really is nothing Wario-like about Bananza. Treasure hunting isn't really the focus here.
Wait, wait, I think we need a bit more discussion in another article about the frame rate problems mentioned here. What does it mean that a near-launch, first-party Switch 2 title has noticeably chugging framerate in the more complex areas of the game? We can't already be seeing some of the limitations of this brand-new hardware, can we? I guess we can, but... oof.
Yeah I’m about to go apesh*t on this game, my time has finally come
@N00BiSH
"there really is nothing Wario-like about Bananza.'
Destroying the environment and punching are both way more Wario like than DK. ✌️ That's what I'm saying.
There's literally nothing DK like in this game, imo, except that they though "strong arms = DK" and stuck him in there, and grafted in the setting and music. it might as well have stayed "Goomba With Hands in Voxel Land."
I know you don't agree but feel free to come at me again about it 😂👍
"Treasure hunting isn't really the focus here."
Excuse me but are you not digging in the ground searching for "crystal bananas?" 🤔
I just hope Odd Rock is still a skin option for Pauline, I thought the game's concept was more appealing before child was involved (and seeing the little rock sing to DK just sounds all the more entertaining).
@Broosh
Yeah, the ride-along "helper" is a major turn off for me. This seemed like a fresh idea when Jak + Daxter came out, seemed a little hackey to me when ratchet and clank copied it, and 20+ years later Nintendo just can't let it go 😮💨
How this isn't a 10 I will never know, it looks incredible! A great evolution of the Odyssey formula (and this is from someone who wanted something more akin to DK64).
Odyssey was not my style, I miss the faster pace of galaxy, but my kids are gonna love this.
@The_Nintend_Pedant Wario isn't the type to destroy the environment with his bare hands - he's more likely to use bombs and explosives. Besides, Wario Land games aren't about strength and destruction, they're about greed and exploration. Punching isn't a Wario move in those games. Wario World has punching, but that's only one game and destruction still isn't the point.
"Excuse me but are you not digging in the ground searching for "crystal bananas?""
You're collecting those because that's the just the goal of a collectathon platformer - no different than Power Stars or Jiggies. In Wario, you collect treasure in order to get the best possible outcome. Not the same.
I'll be that guy, digital download tomorrow to save a few £. Thought I would bring the thread back to the normal discussion of late on this site.
The 9 vs 10 is already getting a bit stale.
@The_Nintend_Pedant indeed! Glad to see the Switch 2 won't be totally DK-less.
@N00BiSH
"Wario isn't the type to destroy the environment with his bare hands - he's more likely to use bombs and explosives."
Wrong, he regularly butt stomps and shoulder tackles bricks in order to find secret areas.
"You're collecting those because that's the just the goal of a collectathon platformer - no different than Power Stars or Jiggies. In Wario, you collect treasure in order to get the best possible outcome. Not the same."
This is crazy weak argumentation, talk about a distinction without a difference!
You've lost the way, here. You've argued that punching w DK makes absolute sense because he is big and strong, and he has punched in at least one game before. Now you are saying that Punching is not very "Wario" even though he is big and strong AND punched in at least one game before. 😵💫👍
Did not expect to have my Switch 2 at this point in time but the stars misaligned and so I do. Looking forward to playing this tomorrow. DK64 shadow drop on NSO too.....?
Very unfair to detract an entire point for the performance hiccups, unless they really get in the way of enjoyment.
I'm so excited for tomorrow! Bring on the new era of DK!
@Switch_Pro
That's not how the scoring system works. 👍
@The_Nintend_Pedant
"Wrong, he regularly butt stomps and shoulder tackles bricks in order to find secret areas."
Notice how you didn't mention punching, as well as the many different environmental transformations - which also don't factor in punching.
"This is crazy weak argumentation, talk about a distinction without a difference!"
Do you get a different endings when you collect more Stars and Moons in Mario? No. You don't. There's a difference. The number of collectables you get don't radically alter the outcome compared to Wario, which rewards you with a multitude of different endings depending on how much you get(and in some cases, how quickly you get them).
"Punching is not very "Wario" even though he is big and strong AND punched in at least one game before."
As I said, his games are not about strength and his muscle is not what define him - they are facets, but not the sole facets. Wario's major character trait is his Greed. It's the main motivator behind all of his actions and what his platformer games are designed around.
Punching makes more sense for DK because his most defining trait is his massive strength, which he's utilized multiple times in past titles - even in the Country games he's thrown punches.
@chardir
"NL should just stop giving review scores. Everyone is discussing the number and not the review, and it happens every time."
I agree, I'll bet a lot of these people would just stop clicking on reviews if they got rid of the number 🙄 which cuts one way for us 👍 and another for NintendoLife 👎 unfortunately.
@N00BiSH
Agree to disagree, frankly IMO your arguments are too slippery and I can't explain my position any more fully. Thanks for playing with me again today 🙂✌️ you are one of my favorite Lifers, no question. 👍
I finally caved today and bought a Switch 2, largely based on the reviews for this game. I bought the Mario Kart World bundle (of course) and a Pro controller. Just setting it up now.
@The_Nintend_Pedant I'll take that as a compliment, if only because this argument is starting to blue screen my brain. You do you.
@MamaSymphonia Same team, so it makes sense
I was really hoping this would get 10/10. A score of 9 is OK but disappointed it isn't 10. May still buy it.
That tagline though… 😆 I will DEFINITELY be getting this when I get a Switch 2, I LOVE Donkey Kong, and Mario Odyssey is one of the finest games ever made. This cannot possibly disappoint me.
@N00BiSH
Haha me too 👍 and, plz do. I love to have real conversations with actual disagreements and honest opinions, but I hope everyone knows I'm playin' and there's no hard feelings. (Unless there is and ya know what ya did 😂👍)
I hope we both enjoy this game when we do end up playing it!✌️
"Donkey Kong Bananza Switch 2 2025"
"Game Rating 6.4
Our Review: Scroll Down
User Ratings: 5"
6.4?
I wonder if these 5 Nintendo Life users have the game, or have even played it..
"Donkey Kong Bananza is an almighty re-introduction to the world of 3D platforming for DK, and arguably the Switch 2's first absolute must-play."
Mario Kart World is a definitive must play in my book.
from the video i have seen i think donkey kong bonanza is a more compelling game to buy and experience then mario kart world..
they must some pretty awful performance hiccups.
I can't say I love the title of this article. Why is it a competition between this game and Odyssey?
@YunoboCo "How is my negative comment less constructive than other people’s positive comment?" Criticism is energy zapping and, non-toxic workplaces will always reinforce that criticism needs to be constructive because it's pretty useless otherwise.
Ita a 10 you were pais by sony to lower the score in metacritic? And from a nintenso site, shame
Arg I wanna get this but I am still working on Mario Kart and still need to get Street Fighter. I need more allowance!
@johnedwin That's true. Mario Kart World is probably a 7 game for me. 8 at best.
@B_Lindz This was my question exactly. I think the game would have been better served judging it on its own merits, or at least not comparing it so often to one specific game that isn't even in the same series.
Looks great, won’t get it until the weekend but looking forward to it.
Less than 7 weeks in and Switch 2 already has 2 top quality exclusives. Some start.
People getting upset and throwing around accusations of NL being paid to give 9 instead of 10 are very funny 😆
@James1010uk Is this joke unintentional. One point away from perfection isn't good enough...
Looking forward to enjoying this. I love what I read in the review. Cheers for the review..
Looking forward to going BA-NA-NAS!
DKB sounds like it’ll be a fun romp - hopefully I can get my kiddos to play co-op with me.
Sounds like it should’ve been a 10/10 smh
@Nightcrawler71 Have fun!!
Two totally polar opposite games that does things differently and doesn't compare with each other. A cheapout to give it a 9....
Man this review reads like a 10. Feels like the only reason it didn't get a 10 was because it was frigging donkey kong and not mario or zelda
@sinnerini every mainline reviewer except ign gave it a 9 score eurogamer gave it a 8 score..
Seems amazing and can't wait to play it one day, but about 35 hours for 99 CAD? I knew it'd be somewhat short (glad it's not only 20 hours) so they need to reduce the price. Other companies launch 100 hour games for 69/79 CAD.
@The_Nintend_Pedant Wario is a greedy character who effectively wishes to garner riches for the sake of having them. He screws people over in his games- and his gameplay is much more than just being centered around destruction.
Donkey Kong has always been a really strong character in his series. Him using brute strength to destroy chunks of the environment makes sense from a gameplay perspective, given how he’s able to do things like lift massive barrels and chuck them with ease. On top of this, Bananza isn’t about treasure hunting while the Wario games are. DK isn’t amassing bananium because he wants to get rich- he’s digging it up so he can eat it, because he’s a Gorilla. His whole journey in Bananza is so that he can get to the center of the earth and wish for tons of Bananas to eat- at least going off of what the developers have said.
There’s a fundamental difference between the characters- and Bananza fits DK more than it would Wario given that the game was designed for DK in mind.
Better or not, I'm just glad it's good!
but, um... performance drops on their BRAND NEW console? Come on...
@Princess_Lilly The performance drops are because the game uses voxel terrain for everything. All of the enemies and environments in the level are built out of voxels- which is relatively resource intensive. Especially when everything is able to be taken apart and outright destroyed.
@PikminMarioKirby I'm not disagreeing with you the game looks amazing but them games you mentioned were running on lot weaker hardware there shoudnt be technical problems on the switch 2 at all full stop especially how powerful the machine is makes no odds to me either way plus they will improve that. the game looks amazing nintendo have done it again
This looks to be a great game but also what's with the hate for MKW? I'm loving it so far and after all the dlc is released it will be a stone cold classic
@VoidofLight
circular logic
"There’s a fundamental difference between the characters- and Bananza fits DK more than it would Wario given that the game was designed for DK in mind."
Your logic would make sense if they had written the scenario before they chose the character, but by all accounts, this started as a Goomba with Hands voxel smashing concept and had DK grafted onto it, and we can assume that the scenario, setting, and story were created in place after the fact.
This could easily be Wario smashing around for coins instead. The scenario and "character" of the characters is beside the point, and came clearly after DK was chosen, not before.
(In case it isn't clear, I'm not advocating that DK be replaced with Wario in this game as it exists. I'm saying he would have been a better fit and more interesting choice to begin with, and the game would be "designed with Wario in mind," right? 👍)
This is a matter of opinion, and yeah DK is far more popular than Wario so I wasn't expecting to get like a parade in my honor for this idea 😂
But if you are going to try to prove my opinion "wrong" and you don't really have a good argument then I'm not going to be persuaded. I love a good counterpoint and I love being proven legitimately wrong aka learning, but this ain't it! ✌️
@VoidofLight

@Princess_Lilly
They built a game that was too powerful for their own hardware, but somehow that's not their fault because "voxels."
Kind of like how they had 8 years of drifting sticks, and didn't implement hall effect sticks in their new console but that's not their fault because "magnets."
or like how they made a DRM policy that is already screwing over loyal, legal customers, but it's not their fault because "piracy."
@The_Nintend_Pedant They wouldn't have kept the idea of breaking chunks of terrain for DK if DK didn't fit the idea. The idea of breaking terrain was something they were playing around with towards the end of Odyssey's development, but it was always just a simple test of tech. They were told to make a 3D DK game, and then decided to repurpose that idea after the fact because they believed it fit DK. Even Miyamoto and other staff who worked on the original Donkey Kong and the DK series of games approved of the gameplay fitting alongside DK.
Also, you really don't understand game dev- do you? I never said it wasn't their fault the game doesn't perform smoothly. I said that the core reason it doesn't run at 60 FPS at all times is because of the voxel system- which is incredibly intensive in terms of development for a game. The devs made it clear in their interview (which I can tell you didn't read) that the way voxels work is effectively going to take eight times the resources that a normal game without this tech would take.
"Tanaka: From a programmer’s perspective, voxel technology is well-suited for creating gameplay centered around destruction. However, it also uses a lot of system memory, and we faced the challenge of Switch not having enough to support everything we wanted to do. I'll explain with some simple arithmetic. If you're asked to double the size of a 1 × 1 pixel image in both width and height, you end up with a 2 × 2 image, which means four times as many pixels. But when you do the same with voxels, you've got width and height, but also depth to contend with. So, doubling all three dimensions gives you 2 × 2 × 2, or eight times the data. It may sound simple to just “double something,” but the reality is that memory usage, voxel density, and all kinds of processes end up gobbling up eight times the resources. It was clear that the memory available on Switch would struggle to handle that load, and we felt that manifesting the huge volume of terrain that we did in this game might have been unachievable on that platform. With the move to Switch 2, we gained not only more memory but also greater processing capacity. That gave us the freedom to incorporate gameplay ideas we'd previously abandoned because they were too demanding."
@Ramouz really not sure if you're serious with your comment about 35 hours
"They were told to make a 3D DK game, and then decided to repurpose that idea after the fact because they believed it fit DK."
My argument is that it would fit Wario better, as it has been from the very beginning. 👍 I don't really see how this disproves that.
"Also, you really don't understand game dev- do you? I never said it wasn't their fault the game doesn't perform smoothly. I said that the core reason it doesn't run at 60 FPS at all times is because of the voxel system- which is incredibly intensive in terms of development for a game. The devs made it clear in their interview (which I can tell you didn't read) that the way voxels work is effectively going to take eight times the resources that a normal game without this tech would take."
Essentially it goes like this:
"hey, your game doesn't run smoothly on the new hardware."
"Well duh! We used voxels!"
I believe I have read every article about this game that has been posted on this site. ✌️ And, I think I "understand game dev" about as well as anyone who has no game making experience, and certainly don't need it to see circular logic and other fallacies presented as valid arguments.
They decided to make a game that was too advanced for their hardware.
They decided DK was the right character for this game.
I disagree with both decisions.
I feel like I've been pretty clear about this. 👍
You are welcome to disagree but the attempt at making me feel like I don't know enough about "game dev" to have an opinion is pretty cheap and irrelevant. ✌️
I am absolutely loving all the sour grapes and people just being flat out purposefully obtuse in this thread. Some of you must have lost a bet or something!
But seriously, not to say you have to love everything Nintendo does, but some of you seem to flat out dislike when they succeed. If you fall in that category, I would suggest maybe......don't read sites like this? I mean, for the last 7 or 8 years, and what's looking like probably the next 7 or 8 years, Nintendo is on a tear. And rightfully so. I think it's their turn again. If that bothers you, you're probably preaching at the wrong crowd here.
Removed - flaming/arguing
35 hours for 99 CAD. Too high of a price.
@USWITCH64 Yeah, I'm not getting the hate on the new Kart either. I've been playing the game since launch and I'm still in love with it. To each their own I guess.
Regarding DKB, the nonsense about needing a totally fixed and totally stable 60fps on DKB is ridiculous, imho. If you need that kind of stuff to have an enjoyable experience, perhaps consider 'upgrading' from Nintendo, or play less-demanding games.
shrugs
Legit question: do they explain in-game why Pauline is barefoot?
And no, I'm not asking because I think someone at Nintendo became Dirty Dan, I'm asking because I always thought she had sandals.
@Ramouz oh. You really are serious and comparing apples with pineapples.
From what I've seen so far, it appears to be more thematically coherent than Odyssey.
@VoidofLight oh thanks good to know. They should optimize it better though, because at the end of the day, customer doesn't want to know why something doesn't work, they want the product to work.
@The_Nintend_Pedant yeah I think people just want Nintendo to be a good guy of the industry very badly. They fell apart after Wii U. There were some fantastic games for Switch but there were some slops, and even the best games had cut corners (MK8 doesn't even have volume options so if you want to turn up and hear the game's music, you... go to youtube)
Same with joycons, nowadays it's just excel files on projected sales with quality drops.
@jsty3105
Both fruits
Both have fructose
Both contain the word "apple"
I could go on 😂✌️
@Princess_Lilly
"They should optimize it better though, because at the end of the day, customer doesn't want to know why something doesn't work, they want the product to work."
Really well said. 👍 It's a bit like saying "yeah, our cars don't run as well as they could, but in our defense the engine we spec'd really isn't enough for the size of the vehicle."
"I think people just want Nintendo to be a good guy of the industry very badly."
I agree, and I'm so sorry that I can't help them out with that. Nintendo holds all the cards, here.
I don't mind being an outlier, but I'm glad there are some people on here that see it my way 🙂✌️
And, I will never apologize for giving my honest opinion in good faith, or for calling out Nintendo as I see fit, from the perspective of a life long fan. 👍 I've been on here defending them countless times, but only 100% fealty will do, for some.
@Princess_Lilly The product still works, it's just that it dips in intensive areas which is unavoidable on the type of hardware that the Switch 2 is. No console is without FPS dips. Even the PS5 struggles to run games like Final Fantasy XVI. In order to "optimize it" on this hardware, they'd end up having to get rid of most of the detail, or reduce what can be broken from what can't.
@spiderman0616
In case this was directed at me, I'll go ahead and respond to it.
Financial success and market dominance are the killers of creativity. It happens every time, and sadly it happened with Nintendo.
There's a reason their best games in the last 20 years came out when they were struggling to remain competitive (Melee, GX, Galaxy, BOTW, MK8) and then couldn't pull together a decent "Mario golf" or "sports" etc. game on switch when the time came, after the pressure was on and the shareholders started getting their way.
The old Nintendo wouldn't have let some considerable fraction of the Switch 1st party catalogue out of the barn.
I like to comment on what I think about how Nintendo is doing. I will always be honest with you, and I will never gladhand for "likes" or reassurance. You can call my opinions sour grapes if you want, but that has as much to do with your particular perspective as it does mine, and the only skin I have in the game is "I'm a Nintendo fan who wants them to make good games." ✌️
@The_Nintend_Pedant I mean, it wasn’t directed at you, but who is going to read all these paragraphs and paragraphs? We’re in a forum about what’s essentially a toy. Chill.
How is this not 10/10 Mario Kart World got a 9 yet that is one of the weakest games in the Mario Kart series and feels unfinished. This should have been the launch game not a racer.
Comments remind me of telling my friend that Man of steel was trash, and him offering all kinds of reasons why, like reshoots, rewrites, whatever it was. The reasons don't change the fact of the thing. We should be able to agree that frame rate drops are not a good thing. If it doesn't bother you, great, buy the game. That's why the actual review is the important part, not the number, please consider dropping the x/10 system.
@Ralizah Exactly if the developer didn't come out and say that performance wasn't perfect they give this game a 10.
@spiderman0616
Somehow I knew you'd say that 😆 I'll admit, I've been a bit prolific lately. 😅✌️
@USWITCH64 Because it was the main launch game so based on reputation we thought it would blow our sucks off but it didn't. Tracks change after each lap this should be an option and there is no check list in the open world mode so you don't know what is left to do in each area it felt a little unfinished still a good game though but Donkey Kong should have been the launch game and Mario Kart should have released later in the year.
@spiderman0616 @The_Nintend_Pedant I mean being a bit overly verbose is something of a favorite trait of the pedant/pedantic folks XD Just joking around!
@The_Nintend_Pedant I chose Pineapple quite deliberately 😁. He was waffling about hours of gameplay for a review and comparing against completionist hours in other games. There are several 100 hour games you can complete in 20-30 hours. What's missing from his reductive diss is the measure of fun and replay ability ☺️
@Ramouz This is an awful way to do pricing. I think there is definitely a limit, but generally over like 10-15 hours of gameplay is a pretty full game. Plenty of slop out there that has tons of repetition to get 100 hours and aren't anywhere near the quality of shorter games.
Im gaming since early 90s, joined multiple communities on the way but never seen anything like this. People are genuinly upset that game got 9 and not 10 What kind of toddler logic is that?
1. games reviews are subjective by design, just like books or movies reviews
2. review score has nothing to do with your own enjoyment, literally nothing
3. playing games with low scores is not a sin, some people actually only play low scored games to avoid popular overhyped games
4. nobody cares or is judging you for what games you play
Not gonna read the review atm beyond the pro/cons because I'm avoiding spoilers but great to hear you rate it. Looks awesome.
@jsty3105
I think if a game respects your time, it should be able to deliver ~$60 worth of value in a relatively short span 👍
I'm not a big mario or dk fan. I finished Mario Odyssey, game was fun here and there but sometimes tedious. But I hope this game does stay very popular. DK needs more attention and he hasn't gotten a new main game since a while till now. Thats why I also liked that one of the new switch games for switch 2 is a DK game. Instead of another main mario story game like always.
Looks like a fantastic game. I’m not getting it right now. Money be tight yo and I still need to finish Cyberpunk and some Switch 1 games on my Switch 2 I want to finish.
I’m gonna save it for a real dead period next year. Like when I desperately need something to play.
So, can I say that Donkey Kong Bananza is better than Super Mario Odyssey? No, I can't. And honestly, what is?
Answer: Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 and Super Mario 3D World
I see on youtube it takes 8 hours to complete, perfectly fine IMO. Maybe 10-12 hours would be ideal but 8 hours is great. Just not my type of game, still looks like Minecraft wannabe to me.
Ummmm big DK energy….
I'm unbelievably excited for this, based on the reviews and spoilers I've seen, I think this is going to be not only special, but the beginning for a new era of DK games.
@MTMike87 how can you have too much to play on the switch 2 already when this is basically the 2nd switch game worth getting?
I don’t get the comments by some that this kind of game is not a good fit for DK, or that Wario would have been a much better fit. I think DK using his arms this way is very appropriate. If anything, the thing that I am not keen on is the graphical style/colour palette. When I look at it I see traces of Odyssey and many more traces of BOTW/TOTK. It doesn’t „look“ like a DK game to me. If I were the reviewer, which happily I am not, I would be docking a point for this rather than any slight frame rate drops.
So many sites calling this a masterpiece 10/10 ...has nintendo life lost its love for nintendo?? Doesnt this website exist to give games like this ten out of ten!!? Kidding but i always used to love NL's reliability in awarding full marks to the big 1st party games like this in the past.
@The_Nintend_Pedant I totally understand the argument about value Vs cost. I just think it's reductive and pointless for m to base value on hours to finish the main game. That's partly how we ended up with so much bloat in modern games.
Edit: Also, there are zero games where the main game takes 100 hours to complete and there's not much info yet on how long it could take to 100% DK but it's definitely longer than 36 hours based on this review
Excited to try this! And I will once I’m done with splatoon 3 story mode and PS5R.
So nice to have a meaty first party one player experience to dive into on my switch 2.
I did wanna dive into fantasy life sw2 upgrade too, so might not be day one on DKB but will defo pick it up over Summer (physical of course!). Pleased to see it got great reviews and looking forward to feeling that same delight as the first time I played Odyssey. Enjoy all!
Just watched full walktrough, game looks boring as hell, would rather spend this 80 euro on burgers.
@jsty3105
I totally agree!
IMO, the best games are either 20-40 hrs, or short experiences with extreme replay value.
Example: I can beat gungeon in probably an hr. but it took me dozens of tries to even be able to, and "beating" that game is the beginning.
Incidentally I think I paid 5 bucks for that game 😂
IGN giving a better score than NL to a Nintendo exclusive is probably a very unique situation.
Also, I saw that David Wise is not part of the game and that makes me very sad. I was talking about the very unique atmosphere of DKC thanks to David Wise and I think an easy way to give DKB a slightly more DKC vibe without even trying too hard was precisely to have Wise on board. So that's a pity really. And I've seen a couple people online already stating that the music feels too generic for a DK game.
@Mocznik that's surely the best way to experience the game
Not related, but does someone have serious problem navigating this website? I always have slowdowns and pages that do not load. It's a slog trying to read three or four articles
@Paulo That is the right answer. Saying that, Donkey Kong Bananza is the most fun I've had with a 3D platformer since Super Mario 3D World first released back on Wii U.
Gotta save that 10 for Metroid Prime—I see you ;P
Cons: Not without the odd performance hiccup
I honestly think this is unacceptable for a 2025 brand-new expensive console released just 45 days ago. Either Nintendo can no longer optimize their games or the Switch 2 is a low tech overpriced console, a scam.
The 2 songs w words in Mario Odyssey knock the game down a peg. The first time I got to the end and that and heard the song start, I was completely taken out of the game. Completely do not fit in the game. The song at the end should be an epic masterpiece, not a generic pop song. A 10 game made a 9.5 because of this.
@mlt
The game kind of feels like to Mario odyssey what DK64 was to banjo kazooie which extends to the music.
Not that the music is bad or anything, im enjoying it so far and i enjoy grant kirkhopes compositions a lot in 64 but for DK i imagine those looking for that specific flavour which David Wise brought to the table will end up dissapointed.
Enjoying the game overall so far though am not too far into it (around the third world not counting the tutorial area)
Dang, what’s it take to get a 10? Lol
Where in the review does it say they dropped a point because of performance issues. I keep reading this in the comments here but can't see it in the actual review. I have never seen so many complaints for a 9/10 from people who haven't played the game start to finish. 9 out of 10 is a great score, too many 10 out of 10 are thrown out there especially for Nintendo first party games.
Despite not going to, I bought it because of the raving reviews.
It’s better than Odyssey by a mile, but there’s no way this gimmick won’t grow stale. After and hour I felt like ”All right… kinda seen this game now, I think”.
It’s way too simplistic, has absolutely no challenge (so far) and it really is just about smashing up the level with an ugly monkey with an annoying sidekick excitedly cheering you along for… smashing things.
While I’ve gotten some completely braindead enjoyment out of it, and it’s well made — it’s wild that the lowest review score is an 8/10. I’d say, from what I’ve seen so far it’s a 6-7/10, and that would be a generous 7.
Happy for all the people loving it, but… am I missing something?
I played for 30mins and got such severe motion sickness I had to stop. Will see what its like playing on handheld tomorrow. I do not think I am the only one.
@Filthy You have highlighted the parts of the game I though I wouldn't like about. I will wait for a sale that will never come. Bloody hell is Nintendo Store really charging £50 for Donkey Kong Returns, a game that came out on the Wii. Games are so expensive. I actually like the look of Tropical Freeze more than this but again £50. Games for this Switch are just too expensive.
I loved Odyssey so I can't wait to get my big furry ape paws on this game. No Switch 2 though! But I heard Wal-Mart is getting restocks so I will check tomorrow. Don't tell anyone.
Been playing for a good 3 hours. And for now I'm not really feeling it.
I feel like I'm a mindless robot who just go around using the sonar and go towards anything that shines.
It kind of boring honestly.
@Filthy yeah I feel exactly the same
I'm just randomly smashing trough stuff for the last 3 hours. Basically doing the same thing over and over. Just smashing stuff around until you find a banana or a fossil.
I just don't get where is the fun here. I really feel like I'm missing something because I have no idea how such a ripetitive and uninspired (from a Gameplay perspective) game could get such amazing scores.
@Johnny44 When I first saw the reveal trailer I thought the visuals looked a bit like a Skylanders game. The colours and shapes, etc
@Duncanballs it always rains in the comment sections...I will likely pick this up when I get a Switch 2, looks great.
@foursider You can't remap all the buttons but there is a setting in the options to swap the A/B button function.
@Brumblescope
I was thinking there was, but haven't tried it yet. May give it a whirl and see if it helps. Thanks for confirming. I was just so disheveledly disappointed from my initial playthrough that I just had to shut it off before checking. 🫠
Curious that knowing the identity of the developers would create such preconceptions like fear. Personally, if the game is by Nintendo, that's all that matters. When it's the developers behind Mario Odyssey, that should create excitement! If something is handed to an external studio completely, perhaps would I worry. The only real mishap I can think of is F-Zero GX, which simply lacked the quality and nuance of previous games due to Sega's penchant for silliness and gimmicks. Conversely, Metroid Samus Return on 3DS, which was developed by Mercury Steam, worked out wonderfully well.
If I did have a fear about DK Bonanza, it's whether the style of game would interest me. I'm pleased to read that it's beyond mindless destruction and offers a substantial and fun experience. After this review and others, I've decided to buy it.
Honestly very disappointed in this game. I've seen tons of gameplay and it doesn't look anywhere even close to the level of polish a game this expensive should have. You can definitely tell this was a rush job to port this to switch 2.
Finally got a Switch 2! Found at Wal-Mart. I asked yesterday and they said they had a shipment coming in tomorrow (now today). Went to go look today and there was nothing on the shelves but an employee was able to grab one from the back for me! So, recommend checking Wal-Mart. Nice job Nintendo on the supply logistics this time around that they more available than the Switch 1 was near launch.
Got on day one.
It’s a great game, visit feel it just isn’t a Donkey Kong game and it makes me want a new Donkey Kong Country even more.
I actually think the game is a huge missed opportunity and would have been better suited to rejuvenating other IP like Ice Climbers or even a new one all together, something that would be better suited to the relentless digging.
The game is say is underwhelming as I was really looking forward to a Donkey Kong game, which this just isn’t. Still a good game though, but more like 7/10.
Bring on Donkey Kong Country 6 and bring back David Wise scoring the game again.
Edit:
Being honest, this game gets worse the further you get into it. It’s just a mess and random. Too much noise and disjointed nonsense, like a TikTok video over a piece of art. Donkey Kong Games have been renowned for benchmark setting level design, graphic design, sound design, character design, soundtrack, and just generally being a piece of art. THIS is like a James Gunn version of Donkey Kong.
I’m actually liking the new design of Donkey Kong less and less and really want the RareWare version back, and back as soon as possible.
@Zeroo I guess if you are strictly playing Nintendo's offerings this would be the case, lol.
I'm currently juggling: Mario Kart World, Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma, Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time, Yakuza 0: Director's Cut and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition.
All of these have received similar glowing reviews from both Nintendo Life and other gaming websites.
So far I am enjoying it. I am not really playing seriously since no tv but I am loving the exploration offered and the fun big brother/pixar feeling I get from DK and Odd Rock right now. I’ll be sticking with older games as I am finally at my memory limit with the switch 2 out of the box but I am quite pleased with the number of games I have on the system. This has been a really stellar launch window with both 3rd party and 1st party starting out strong and diverse.
@Ellie-Moo
may be a late reply but while the amount and pacing of the collectables are around the same as Odyssey i did find it more satisfying to get them since they are how you obtain skill points for upgrades so every one of them feels like it contributes to some kind of progress so it gives more incentive to go back and find them for reasons other than 100% completion.
game progress this time is more like if the main missions on odyssey were mandatory rather than progress being based on collectables.
I love the sub title, lol….Big DK Energy…..
@Mgalens Thank you. Did you get every moon? Don't think I want to.
@Ellie-Moo
i did eventually end up getting all the moons in odyssey, i enjoyed the game overall but do prefer collections with a tighter structure like Mario 64 or banjo Kazooie. (i did also really enjoy the spyro series)
As mentioned however with this game the bananas are similar to moons in structure, you find them dotted around with multiple obtained from story objectives/bosses and also side areas which contain several, but its the function of them which gives things a different feel so that could end up working better for you (again actual game progress would be more like if odyssey had you finish all the story objectives before moving on to the next world)
*a quick edit, i havent finished the game yet so im not sure if theres some post-game stuff which requires a specific amount of bananas like one of those endgame challenge stages mario games tend to have.
I wonder, the moon hunt in Mario Odyssey was amazing. The amount of Veraity if how to get each of them was what carried that game. Does Bananza carry that same uniqueness. It is to be seen. I have 6 hours in the game and it has almost all be spent digging around in the tutorial zone lolololololol.
I agree with the opinions in this review but I have to comment to say the content writing is awful. The "country" pun made my eyes roll out of my skull so please get a new editor. Also get rid of the "hello lovely peeeeople" guy because as soon as I hear that I click out, it's like nails on a chalkboard. Sorry for being negative, but these are honest thoughts!
@John_Deacon I greatly enjoy DKB to Odyssey, and Odyssey was great. This will be a debate to be had in perpetuity.. so luckily there's no wrong answer. But hey... death, taxes, and comparison being the thief of joy.
A 90% on here and a 90% average on Metacritic, that's not bad (though not as high as Mario Odyssey, of course). I definitely get it someday when I have a Switch 2.
First party game on new hardware and it suffers performance issues? Jesus Nintendo.
I haven't got a Switch 2, I'm holding out for a h/ware refresh. The PSP 1000 screen wasn't great and that was fixed, so I'm hoping Nintendo follow suit. This looks a lot like Wario World.
Finally found a Switch 2 last evening .. will be diving in on this and splitting time with Mario Kart World tonight ! Review certainly read like a 10/10 for the big ape !
