I think he either means: the demand is so high there being sold out and then certain figures are being sold at high prices, or he wants to collect older figures which because limited are expensive.
I guess it depends on what country you live in also, because if you haven't got local stores that stock up, then if you live in a remote country shipping costs etc.
That still doesn't justify blaming retailers whom sold them at MSRP and now Scalpers are selling beyond the MSRP prices. They should call out the Scalpers and not blame retailers whom doesn't stock out of production Amiibos for the prices they are paying Scalpers for.

Amiibo have started to get expensive, so I'm not getting as many as I used to. I don't intend to get a complete collection, but these are the ones gracing my collection.
Smash Bros. series: Mario, Dr. Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, Rosalina & Luma, Bowser, Bowser Jr., Wario, Donkey Kong, DIddy Kong, King K. Rool, Link, Zelda, Sheik, Samus, Zero Suit Samus, Ridley, Dark Samus, Kirby, King Dedede, Meta Knight, Fox, Falco, Wolf, Pikachu, Palutena, Ness, Lucas, Captain Falcon, Ice Climbers, Pikmin & Olimar, R.O.B. (Famicom Colors), Villager, Little Mac, the 3 Mii Fighters, Shulk, Snake, Sonic, Mega Man, Pac-Man, Ryu, Cloud, Bayonetta (both versions), Simon, Richter, Joker, Hero, Banjo-Kazooie.

Other non-amiibo toys-to-life figures I own include Helen Parr/Mrs. Incredible (Disney Infinity), Chase McCain and Police Helicopter (LEGO Dimensions / LEGO City Undercover) and the Starter Pack of Starlink: Battle for Atlas, which has Fox and the Arwing.

I was lucky I could find most of them for affordable prices and a few of them were second-hand but well kept.
Over here in Mexico they started by costing 250 Mexican Pesos back in 2014, which was more or less $15-$20 back then (i.e. par for the course), but starting in 2015 the exchange rate started to go up and so did amiibo prices, It went progressively like this between 2015 all the way to the final Smash 4 releases in 2017: 270 - 280 - 300 - 350 - 400 - 500.
By the end of the Smash 4 line, amiibo were already costing the double of its launch price.
They stayed at 500 from mid-2017 until mid-2020 (pandemic period). In 2018, with the release of Smash Bros. Ultimate, new figures were still 500, but restocks costed 400 each.
When Joker and Hero were released in the middle of the pandemic, the price went up to 570, the same price I paid for Banjo-Kazooie in 2021.
That price stayed for a while, but starting with Kazuya and Sephiroth prices went up again, this time to 600-650. Finally with Sora, the price was 600, but GamePlanet initially only sold it online for 600 but with a shipping cost of 150, which caused them to be called by everyone for selling an amiibo at 750 Mexican Pesos (triple the launch price in Mexico). Thankfully, after a while it became more available in-store and in other stores such as Sears or Liverpool.
Nowadays, retailer amiibo prices in Mexico are all over the place costing between 300 all the way to 1000. Seemingly now depending on the character itself and how many figures are included in a bundle, if it's a bundle. But the good thing is that they're not selling as they used to, so chances are you can find what you're looking for. Last year I bought Smash Rosalina, Villager and Sheik and the store had them available for a good 6 months before I bought them.
The cheapest brand new figure I've bought is R.O.B. (Famicom Colors) at 150 Pesos, though it was yellowed. I didn't mind because I thought "That's what happens to actual Famicoms".
With pre-orders, restocks and everything, I'm pretty sure I've seen almost all the Smash Bros. figures in stores at least once throught those 10 years. The only ones from that series that I've never seen in stores are Daisy, Ice Climbers (mine was second-hand), the Pyra/Mythra duo and Kazuya.
